Default Upconversion Question: PS3, Sony DVD, and Phillips

I've owned a Sony DVP-NS75H upconverter for a couple of years as my primary dvd player on my Samsung DLP. I've played with the settings over and over again in that time, and I think that I have finally got the tv and dvd settings to their best possible performance.

However, more recently I have played some dvds on my PS3 hooked up to the same tv, and I have noticed that on some dvds, the video performance is noticeably better on the PS3 than on the DVP. In these cases the dvds seem less sharp and have more of a red tinge on the DVP than on the PS3. In every case, even on dvds that the DVP does well on, the PS3 does a better job.

I'm hesitant to mess with the settings on the DVP since I have finally gotten it to the point where it looks its best on most dvds. I don't think the difference in performance is just a difference in settings - I think it is a difference in hardware. The PS3 is just a better upconverter. Does this seem reasonable? It certainly seems so since the upconverting hardware on the PS3 might be more advanced than on an earlier Sony dvd player. Am I thinking right?

So, in that vein, I have another question:

I also have a Philips upconvtering dvd player (unsure of the designation). I have always used it on a different tv, but I was thinking of trying it on the Samsung to see if the performance on these "problem dvds" is any better on the Phillips than on the DVP.

Does anyone here know if the upconverting hardware on Phillips players would be "superior" to that of the DVP? Is the chipset (if that is the correct term) on the Phillips in anyway similar to the upconverting technology on a blu-ray player?

Sorry if this is an ignorant question. It certainly seems like the performance out of the DVP and the PS3 would be more similar since they are both Sony products, but who knows?

I probably just need to hook up the Phillips and do some testing, but it would be great to hear some opinions before I go through that process and annoy my wife. I guess I could always use the PS3 as my primary dvd player too, but I'd hate to wear it out.

Anyway, long post. Sorry. Any ideas appreciated. Thanks.

Two things come to mind:

First; yes, it is certainly possible that there is a noticable difference in the upscalers.
The best way to evaluate for this would be to connect the two players to the same TV input port with an appropriate switch and the same content playing on each player and then A/B the two players.

Second; it could be the calibration of the input ports to the TV. Your reference to a "sharpness" difference and a "red tinge" sure sounds more like a calibration issue than an upscaling issue. Have the input ports on the TV been properly calibrated?

I have owned the DVP-NS75H and I still own the PS3 and believe the PS3 is slightly better for DVD after firmware updates improved the performance. I don't use my PS3 for DVD much and prefer to use a less expensive player for DVD just to save wear and tear on the PS3. If you find the difference in performance means you prefer to use your PS3, I sure couldn't argue with that position. I did sell my DVP-NS75H but thought it was really good and would have no problem using it if I had needed to. If anything, I thought the NS75H was sharper but the PS3 better overall.
