Default Which dvd player should I buy?

I have recently purchased a Samsung LN-T4061F. Unfortunately a blue-ray player is not in the budget, and I would buy a HD-dvd player if I could find one for around 100, but have not been able to. My current dvd player is really old, and has been giving me problems so I wanted some input on what would be a better dvd player to get. I am looking at the following models.

Samsung DVD-HD870 - I can get this for $35, it is a refurb unit from geeks(dot)com. This says it up converts to 720p/1080i, my tv is a 1080p, not sure if it makes a difference when up converting a dvd anyway.

The second is the Toshiba SDK970 from Costco for $60. I am not sure I want to spend a lot more than that.

Any opinions on these two players, or other up converting players in the same price range?

thanks,

If I was in your shoes, I'd wait. I'd save what you could spend today and keep adding to it. Then buy a blu-ray player when you have enough saved.

Of course, by then blu-ray might be gone anyway.

Either of the players that the OP is looking at would be fine for playing SD DVDs.
Better to have a decent player than no player at all.

There are a number of sellers on the net that are selling the Toshiba A2 HD DVD player at under $100 new. Check eBay, for example. Now before you jump out of your skin about an obsolete player, it upconverts standard DVDs very well and you would have the bonus of being able to play HD DVDs that are still available. Some of the movie titles are still only available on HD DVDs, like Transformers, and they will play as long as the player is working and the discs are in tact.

It is possible that the titles will eventually be available on Blu-ray, but they will come with a Blu-ray price tag. Right now titles are available for under $10 for HD DVD discs.

Just a thought.

Thanks for the information. My current dvd player is not even progressive, and doesn't play dvds sometimes, so I really need something new. Also my dvds do not look very good on the tv. OTA HD looks great however. The more I think about it I don't want to invest in HDDVD as it is no longer being manufactured. If I begin to build up a collection and the player goes bad they are essentially worthless. Blu-ray is still out of the budget, so I think I will look at getting an upconvert dvd player, to last until I decide blu-ray is in the budget.

thanks for your help.

But as previously stated, the Toshiba A2 HD DVD player is an upconverter, and known to be one of the best. At under $100, its worth it, even if you never bought one HD DVD.
