I just read through this thread and believe there is a lot of misinformation. The DMCA is very clear, it is illegal to defeat digital copy protection and make back up copies of DVD's. I believe the Kaleidescape case has now been lost by Kaleidescape but even if that case is still making its way through the court system, it is not a case about individual's rights to defeating digital copy protection to make copies. That case pertained to Kaleidescape's contract.

If anybody has read the DMCA and believes it provides provisions for defeating digital copy protection and making copies, go ahead and present your interpretation. If you believe there are other laws that provide for that use of a PC or DVR recorder, go ahead and provide that information. The old Betamax case determined one thing, the court indicated there is a legal use for a VCR, timeshifting programming received in your home. That in fact was the primary use for a VCR which has now obviously been extended to DVR's like TiVo, ReplayTV and others.

I always use Pavtube DVD Ripper and it never crashed,
never failed, it's so easy to use.
Pavtube DVD Ripper provides you an easiest way to edit and convert DVDs to any other formats including MP4, 3GP, AVI, MPG, MPEG-4, FLV, MOV, 3G2, VOB, MP3, FLAC, MKA, OGG, WAV, AC3, M4A, so that you can enjoy DVD contents with your portable devices like iPod, iPhone, Blackberry, Cell Phones, etc. on the go. If you like, you can also upload the converted DVD videos to your websites or blogs for sharing after the DVD to FLV conversion.

Although it hasn't been updated in a very long time, DVD Shrink is a tried and true ripper that still works well. just a pity, there isn't one for Blu Ray
that works in the same non complicated way....
