Default please explain this, DVD question?

I have an older Sony DVD player, non-upscaling, but progressive scan. It is connected to my Sony KDL-26M3000 via component video. I set my DVD player to 16:9 (in the setup) and I set the TV to widescreen. It scales across the screen (and looks fairly decent), what is actually happening when I do this? Is the TV upscaling it?

Yes, the TV is doing the upscalling when sent via 480p (progressive scan) and component cables.

With an Upconverting DVD player via HDMI, the DVD's are upscaled internally via the player instead of the TV. Many scalers in HDTV's now are as good or better as the scalers in the UC DVD players on the market anyway (especially those sub $100 players)..

And if "(and looks fairly decent)" is good enough, you do not really need one.

But there is a difference with a GOOD upconverting player and most newer anamorphic wide screen DVDs. Not all upconverting DVD players are equal and not all DVDs either . . . The right combination can yeild remarkable results.

A few weeks ago a neighbor came by while I was watching a movie on a 50" plasma. He has a 42" plasma and a progressive DVD player. He said ". . . I'm going to have to get one of those HD-DVD or Blue Ray players; that picture is just great."

I actually had to take the disc out of the A2 to show him it was NOT and HD-DVD because he did not believe me when I told him that was not HD.
