Default Samsung DVI DVD players

does anyone have a samsung DVD player with the DVI conections wich upconverts it to 720p or 1080i. I've read mixed reviews about them skipping and freezing. Is this true. Is the picture quality worth it?????????

I own the Bravo D1 DVI DVD player and it has some quirks with the tray/drive where I have to reload the DVD at times before the player properly plays the disc, but it only happens occasionally. Otherwise, I can tell you that the DVI picuture is absolutely fantastic. Sounds like the Samsung is very similar in every way. Please keep in mind that the larger the display, the more pronounced is the improvement using DVI over Component. I have an HS20 front projector projecting a 102" image on a wall and that really shows the DVI's clarity. If you have an HDTV that's smaller than 54", you may not see a difference.

Thanks for the reply. I was thinking about using the DVI DVD player with a 50 inch Samsung DLP TV. Would this not we worth it? Should I just get a regular Progressive Scan DVD player??

You'll have to see if you can compare a progressive-scan DVD player with a DVI model. Maybe buy one (w/ return policy) and borrow the other from a friend and see if the DVI model makes a difference worth purchasing.

Thanks. I'm either going to get a Samsung DVI DVD player that upconverts the signal to native 720p and add a sony sound system to that, or I will just get a panasonic home theater system with a built in progressive scan DVD player. Which setup do you recommend???? Both will cost about the same.

I made the decision to go with the DVD-HD841 with the HLP5063...
I was SOOO disappointed with my DVD play on a very nice Sony DVD player. Today I got the 841....... and, after getting all the setups done *remember to hook up composite AND DVI*.... and using the setup to push the display to it's best.... WOW! I rewatched a DVD I was very disappointed in after hooking up to DVI........ GO FOR IT.... This picture is this reason I choose Samsung ...... A regular progressive will surely disappoint.. get the a model that will convert!

Thanks for the advice! I do have one question.....Why do I need to hook up both the DVI and the composite. Don't I just want the DVI for great picture?

Thanx in advance!

The player has an out-of-box default setting using composite or S-video. You need to use one of those first to get to the menu setting in order to activate the DVI port.

Oh ok. I'm think I will definently try this player. I've read that this DVD player is very sensitive and freezes up a lot. Have you found this to be a problem?

Default Hd-931

Coming in a little late here but just for your info, I have the HD-931 and have had none of the quirks or problems that you mentioned. It produces great images. Great upconversion. I have it connected through the DVI to my 50" DLP and have the DLP and the HD sat receiver connected via the RGB. Life is good.

Just for thought, most HDTVs will only have 1 DVI or HDMI input. Since DVD can only spit out 480p, you should reserve your DVI or HDMI input for a true HDTV feed.

Most of us will get HDTV cable/satellite programming, so that STB will be occupying that port. If you purchased this Samsung DVD player, then you will be swapping DVI cables all the time.

Just an observation...

Default HD w/DVI&RGB

My goal in getting the HD931 was to not only be able to get the upconverted image resolution (to match the native 720p resolution of my 50" DLP -- very, very good DVD images) but to also preserve the pure digital signal without any back and forth analog conversion from DVD to my screen. The only outs on the HD931 are a DVI for digital and component for analog. Since both DVI and RGB connections can carry the HD digital signals and since most HD sat receivers have both of these outlets, I am able to get a pure unconverted HD digital signal from satellite to screen (RGB) and an uncoverted digital signal from DVD to screen (DVI). No swapping necessary. As an aside, maybe in the real world the human eye cannot tell the difference between an image from a converted analog signal and a straight digital one, but I like to think I can see a difference. And at the end of the day I'm a happy boy.
