No they don't have 7.1 audio. I answered that on your first post. The best place to rent HD discs is from Netflix.

Welcome to HDF

The only formats to support 7.1 audio are Dolby Digital PLus, Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD.
Dolby Stuff
DTS Stuff

Like fmw said there are no 7.1 movies out yet, but there are a few 6.1's and your receiver can matrix that.
Dolby Digital Surround EX, DTS-ES Discrete 6.1 or DTS-ES Matrix 6.1 Movies

Default Superior sound without a new receiver

I have an HD-DVD player and the sound is being routed through an optical cable to my 5.1 reciever. According to the data on the player, the sound is sent as PCM (I think that is uncompressed data) to the receiver. I have several disks duplicated, and the sound is far superior with the HD-DVD movie over the 5.1 on the DVD.

IMO you do not have to have a new receiver to take advantage of some improvement in the sound quality. Others in this forum may be able to better explain this.

Dolby Digital Plus does not have to simulate 7.1, it can handle up to 13.1 if the studios wanted to.
If you had a movie with DD+ as a choice and you used your optical connection (TOSLINK) then it could deliver up 7.1 audio.

On HD DVD, DD+ is designated a mandatory audio-codec. An HD DVD movie may use DD+ as the primary (or only) audiotrack. An HD DVD player is required to support DD+ audio by decoding and outputing it to the player's output jacks. As stored on disc, the DD+ bitstream can carry for any number of audio-channels up to the maximum allowed, at any bitrate up to 3.0 Mbit/s.

On Blu-ray Disc, DD+ is an optional codec, which can only be used if certain conditions are met. First, DD+ is deployed as an extension to a "core" AC-3 5.1 audiotrack. The AC-3 core is encoded at 640 kbit/s, carries 5 primary channels (and 1 LFE), and is independently playable as a movie audiotrack. The DD+ extension bitstream may only carry data for channels not already present in the AC-3 core — i.e., new channels for a complete 6.1 or 7.1 audiotrack. In other words, on Blu-ray Disc, DD+ audio can not be used to deliver an improved 5.1 audiotrack, but rather, it can only extend a 5.1 (AC-3) audiotrack to 6.1/7.1 audiotracks. The complete audiotrack is allowed a combined bitrate of 1.7 Mbit/s: 640 kbit/s for the AC-3 5.1 core, and 1 Mbit/s for the DD+ extension. During playback, both the core and extension bitstreams contribute to the final audio-output, according to rules embedded in the bitstream metadata.

More Stuff

Your receiver should have a setting for Dolby Pro Logic IIx. That decoder can take a 2 channel signal and upconvert it to 7.1 as well.

That is the question.

I went with HD-DVD, I got the walmart version of the A1 player and it has been the best all around player I've bought.
Play HD-DVD's; ...no problems.
Play SD-DVD's; upconversion to 1080i looks great on my 60" Sony
Play DVD-Audio disks from 5point1.com...no problems
Play a standard CD, burned cd, burned dvd. It takes them all with no problems.

Here is some info for you to check out, see if it helps you decide.
Welcome to the world of High Definition DVD!
