Default Sony DVP-NS71HP HDMI DVD player?

I picked up the Sony DVP-NS71HP player from Costco ($130) last night. Have it hooked up to my 61' RCA HDTV, I honestly do not/did not see any difference between 480 and 1080? Any DVD movie I can try? Should I return it and forget about HDMI DVD player? Thanks.

That is what I have been preaching on this forum. Upconversion is mostly BS IMO. I have a Sony upconversion DVD player and I cant tell a difference between 480p, 720p and 1080i. My HDTV is fixed pixel. Since you did not give model number can I assume you have an LCD or a DLP? If so then you are not going to notice a difference. I cant say on CRT HDTVs however.

My RCA is a DLP, but I also have a Sony 36 XBR CRT (HD ready only). So what do you think? Should I return it? For $130, I can get a nicer regular DVD player. But why are others saying its better, its better, while you and I couldn't tell the differences? BTW, the model number of my RCA is in my signature.

I agree with you guys that in a lot of cases you can't tell the difference between 480p and upconverted 1080i. In some cases with a good player the 480 may actually look better.

Having said that I think it really depends on equipment combinations. On one of my setups I can't tell the difference. On another it does look slightly better at 1080. It seems like every dvd costing over a hundred bucks now has upconversion so I wouldn't return the Sony for a really cheap unit that probably won't output 480p as well as the Sony. (I would be curious what you're thinking of getting though in exchange for the Sony.)

Just looked up your set and see it's 720p native so I assume you've tried 720 out on the player. Without getting into a lot of technical mumbo jumbo I would recommend just trying all three (480/720/1080) and stick with the one that looks best. Good luck

For a dvd player thats not too expensive But has great PQ
you might not see much a diiference in the upconversion but the new sony thats 129.99 on their site, the picture quality is alot better then some other dvd players. it might be the one you have.

Its pQ is great especially on a nice tv with a cable thats at least worth more than 2 dollars.

Alot of people moan around here but they have tvs that arent the nicest PQ, their dvd players and other eQipment you could buy in the slums in INdia. Thats why they say certain stuff sucks when the quality is actually pretty good, but they cant tell because they have horrible set ups.

EX.
WHY doesnt my 90'' insignia rear projection piece of crap have bad color When I play it on my blah blah bal Dvd player thats not a good brand, when using my crappy wires that if I pull on them they brake because they are so cheap and pathetic, OH but theyre digital I bought them in a hut in india. Why doesnt my stuff look good?

There is a reason there are things of better quality out there, its so you have a better experience.

Choose the cheap route all the time and dont look my way.

Why do some say that upconverted DVDs look so much better? They want them to be so they convince themselves of the fact. A lot of people who spend a lot of money on video or audio equipment convince themselves that the PQ or AQ MUST be better. Kind of like Monster cables. They dont want to say to themselves "why did I spend $200 on this cable and it does not sound/look any better"? It is called the placebo effect. I know I may get flamed, but I speak the truth. The HDMI cable is great for reducing cable clutter.

I will agree that uber cheap cables can be avoided, you dont have to break the bank. I bought all my cables off ebay for less than $50 (HDMI, component, audio). If BB or CC had their way I should spend $500 on cables. As far as DVD players I have used and trusted Sony for years. THey have the best picture quality for their segment bar none.

I think i fugured out the upconversion thing,

its mainly the CRTs, and the older model crts and lcds that the upconversions have the most effect. The dvd player's conversion is better than the tv. ANd the newer tvs have almost the same as the upconversion players.

BUT, its still important to get a DECENT dvd player because even if the upconversion isnt working, the PQ and SOUND can be drastically different on model and brand.

Especially the new dvd players this year they have very good sound and PQ

I also just picked up the Sony player at Costco. Seemed like a good price ($130). I replaced a Pioneer DV-434 player that the tray was not working very good on. I have a Sony 46" LCD Flat Panel and watched a DVD last night and it looked very good. I believe better than the Pioneer player by a little bit (was showing at 1080i). Pioneer player was progressive also but no upconversion as it was an older player. For the price, I figure why not have the option of upconversion - the picture looks great and sound is very good also.

I have hooked up to HDMI to TV, using optical for sound to receiver. Bad thing is my Sony TV only has 1 HDMI port, so now have to use Component cable for Cable Box (was using HDMI for Cable Box). I am thinking of buying a 2 port hub so I can hook up both DVD and Cable Box via HDMI. I would just have to switch between the two. I am still checking to see how picture quality is through the Component cable vs HDMI before making that decision.

I guess a question I have now since reading some other posts would be, should I just hook up the new Sony DVD player (DVP-NS71HP) via Component cables and put Cable Box back on HDMI. Is the upconversion really going to make a difference via HDMI or is 480p through Component cable and letting TV do its thing going to be the same picture. Maybe I am just seeing a difference because the Sony player is about 4 years newer than my old Pioneer player? My Sony TV is again a 46" LCD Flat Panel - Resolution is 1366x768. That way I would save $150 or more on a 2 way HDMI port (and the switching between them). I just wished this TV had 2 HDMI ports and I would have no problem. Any guesses?

Thanks.

I cant speak of the NS71HP, but my NS90V has the option of doing DD or PCM through the HDMI. I select the HDMI to output PCM and the coax to output bitstream. I watch some old TV shows on DVD and dont need to fire the receiver up.

For your problem having only one HDMI, I am in the same boat. I bought the monoprice HDMI switcher off ebay for like $35 and it works great. It is a manual mechanical switcher so therefore it needs no power. It does however have no remote so you must get up and manually switch it. I figure no big deal since I have to get up and put the disc in. Before I had the box I hooked up the sat box via HDMI and the DVD via component. The sat box looked a tad better on HDMI so I left it that way.

Do you really have 617 DVDs? No wonder you don't want to switch to HD-DVD or Blu-ray!

Yes, those are only counting the region one store bought discs. I have quite a few Asian region free DVDs in my collection as well. Hollywood has gotten quite a bit of my money over the years. I am considering getting the Helios or Oppo DVD player as they are region free and the Helios will play PAL DVDs on an NTSC display. You can go to my website as I have posted pics of the setup and collection. My goal is to fill that shelf up.

http://www.stchman.com/home_theater.html

I will switch to HD-DVD or BluRay once there is a winner and the player comes down to the $200 price range. Backwards compatibility is a must as you see. I believe that regular DVDs and their players wont go away for at least another 10 years. Heck VCRs are still hanging around.

Thanks for the reply. We seem to be in the same situation. I am going to check Cable picture thru Component today. If not happy, I will look at HDMI Switch. The price you gave is a lot lower than I expected. Makes it an easy choice.

One question - any issues with setup of TV Picture for your Sat and DVD? The same settings work good for both without having to make changes to the TV setting since both share same video input?

Thanks again.

If you are referring to brightness and contrast etc. then yes both the DVD and sat box look good with the same settings. I have played with the picture settings and there does not appear to be a big difference when I play with the settings.

As far as HDMI switches, the Geffen ones with a remote are absurdly expensive for what you get. The mechanical ones are far cheaper.

Looks like I have a switch narrowed down to a Radio Shack 3 port ($79) or Monoprice 5 port ($130). I am thinking a 2 port one may not be enough when my kids finally get a new game system that uses HDMI also. Not sure if there will be a need for anymore than 3 ports. Maybe digital cameras in the future, who knows. 2 port Monoprice is only about $30.

Thanks for your help and appreciate your comments. They make sense.
