What is HD?

For the second straight time, first with a Panasonic S77 and now with the S97, the audio portion using the supplied HDMI cable has just quit working.
Elsewhere in this forum the Panasonic Tech guys told someone you can't get audio out of the HDMI cable, you also need to set up component left and right channel. This is not correct since both units worked about 3 months before the audio portion quit working using the HDMI cable only. The common denominator...the point when the audio just went away...was changing the video output between 480 and 720. I guess I should have learned my lesson with the S77 but from what I read you're supposed to be able to go between the two at will. Each time this has happened I've hooked up component audio and video and it works. But using the HDMI cable, all I get is video. Anyone heard of or seen this problem and is there a fix for it? Maybe these units are just garbage and if so, can anyone recommend something that will work for more than three months. Thanks, Mark Oceanside, CA |

Are you saying when you switch back to 480p the audio still doesn't work over HDMI?
What display are you using? According to the S97 manual, if you are using HDMI with something that doesn't support copy protection, the audio output of the HDMI interface will be disabled (but I would suspect that would be true at 480p as well...). You may want to check the DVD player menus to see what audio output format is selected for the DVD player. Perhaps when you select 720p, the DVD player switches to an audio codec that your display doesn't support or which needs to be enabled on your display using it's menus. It is also possible to disable HDMI audio from the player menus as well, so make sure audio is enabled over HDMI. There is an HDMI Status display in the menu options which should tell you whatever is being used over the HDMI port. |
