I recently purchased an Oppo upconverting DVD player for my Sony 36XS955 CRT (1080i). After trying a few movies, the one that impressed me the most, in terms of video, was "The Fifth Element", whereas "Aliens" did not seem to improve much in video quality.
Are there any suggestions for movies that play well on an upconverted DVD player? Either by title or specific format, or mastering technology? Gracias, |

Any DVD with a high bit-rate helps.

I haven't compared in a long time but "Finding Nemo" and "Gladiator" were two that I thought offered noticeable improvement when I first got my player a couple of years ago. Superbit titles reputedly are good but the few I tried found me scratching my head to see any difference. The difference is never great in any event when compared to a good 480p signal but as I always say worth the minimal additional cost to me.

I would think the last couple of Star Wars movies are good... they look great with just progressive scan. Have you tried those???

Off the top of myhead, I found the following movies to look particularly good on my combination of Oppo + Toshiba 56HM195 (1080 DLP):
Titanic Special Collectors Edition LOTR Special Extended Edition - all three (PAL Reg2) Troy (PAL Reg2) Lawrence of Arabia Superbit (considering its age) In the case of that Titanic release, I just had a chance to compare that at a friends house the other night with my Oppo against a prog scan player. The difference was pretty significant I have to say. On the other hand, my PAL Reg2 release of Gladiator was a little disappointing on my set. Still pretty glorious to be sure, but I had expected even more since it looked so darn good on my old widescreen PAL CRT. One other disappointment was Cold Mountain (NTSC Reg1). Stunning Cinematography, but didn't look that good on my set. Last edited by Brandenborg; 04-10-2006 at 10:15 AM. |

I have to agree with chris,I notice very little difference. I have the LG511 on my Philips and the Sony, and a Toshiba 4980 on the Insignia and even on some of the movies I've seen listed on this post,I still notice little change.I even unlocked the HDCP on the LG and hooked it up to the Insignia thru components and also a pretty slight difference. My Denon 1910 looks WAY better on every set, and it "plain old" progressive scan. I dont regret buying the upconverters cause whats better than new toys

Yea your right it is upconverting but it displays in 480p thru components much better IMO. I have only had it hooked up once thru the DVI and wasnt impressed at all.The pscan thru components looks much better on all my sets.I may have mislead saying it was a "plain old pscan" player. i simply meant that IMO it looks much better in pscan thru components than any upconverter set to any resolution thru HDMI that I have seen.

Oh yea,it is the Faroudja FLI-2103. Do you happen to know which MPEG decoder this things using? Its mounted on the underside of a video board and as far as I can see,is inaccessible. Also thru the DVI it seems the Faroudja has terrible macro problems,I'm told this is common even on the high end Denon's but why?Thru components its much better. This is the same chip in the high end denons right?
