Question Samsung HD841 DVI Problem with 52HMX84

I am hoping somebody can explain the following: I just bought a Toshiba 52HMX84 DLP and love it. I hooked my Samsung HD841 up to the HDMI port on the TV using a DVI-HDMI monster cable and set the DVD to 720p which the Toshiba natively supports. The problem I have is that in scenes that are dark, the screen image on the dark areas of the screen black out and I cant see anything in those areas. There is no shades of gray, just blacked out shapes. In bright scenes I dont experience this problem. Frustrated, I tried component video cables and the DVD plays fine but I bought the DVD player for its upscaling capabilities

1) Why would the DVI-HDMI connection cause these artifacts? Both My Toshiba and DVD player are HDCP compliant.

2) Would I be better off going for the Toshiba DVD player instead of the Samsung?

I would be interested in hearing any other user's experiences with the blacked out shapes on dark scenes.

Thanks

Steve

Have you tried setting your 841 to 1080i and if so were the results the same?

Red face Update

I wanted to update the problem I am having. I went out today and bought the Toshiba SD-5970 and my problem is solved. Apparently the samsung dvd and toshiba DLP dont work well together in DVI mode. By the way, the 5970 is awesome on the DLP!

Just the right question - and just the right answer. I want a large screen format and dlp - have looked for last 5 months, and lots has changed. Samsung, RCA, then Mits, LG, Panasonic, Zenith (read LG), Toshiba, and I think Hitachi have all sucumb to the sway of DLP. And each vairation to the Chip yields a far better picture than LCD and L-COs projection - and, I would argue, the majority of Plasma and larger LCD screens.

So, I am really interested in your opinion of the Toshiba - when I first saw it I was slightly amazed by the cleared and brighter picture. I am aware that there is an 'x' version - which youpurchased and I cannot clearly understand what it has that the non-'x' version has - I can only identify that it has two hdvi inpust instead of one - and cost $200 canadian more thn the '84'.

And then I also would like to know if you looked at the new '94' models which include 'i-eee' ports - presumably to improve computer based video interfaces - I really can't decide whether my computer interface is worth the extra $1,000 that it would cost me to by the new '94' model.

More importantly - how is the set at handling standart broadcast signals ? And does the Toshiba DVD player handle the digital sound using dvi - separte optical for 5.1/6.1 ?

Default Samsung HD841 and Sharp LC45GX6U

After 4 hours trying to setup HD841 I quit. Got a new Toshiba with HDMI port - works after connection, no problem at all. Perfect picture.
