Hi everyone, I have a question about these Upward convertible DvD players. I have a mistubishi HDTV that is about 4 years old, so it doesnt have an HDMI input nor a DVI input. It using only the 3 component inputs that goes to the TV.
Here is my question: Do I need to have HDMI inputs to my TV to benefit from the Upward conversion? Will the DvD player upward convert using the three analog component inputs? Thanks |

DVI/HDMI carry a digital signal that is not changed. Comp. video however changes a digital signal to analog then back to digital. A DVd deck that up-converts a signal will not be useable for your tv. Your tv will up-convert what it needs to. The DVD players that up-convert are kind of useless because your tv will do the same thing. I would recomend you get a prog. scan DVD player that will give you the best possible P/Q. I have seen where only big screen Tv's benifit from Up-conversion DVd units anyway. I ran out and bought one without 1st doing my homework, and I still use my Prog scan deck. Want to buy one? with a DVI cable included! cheap!

Thanks, but I do have a big screen TV. Its a pitty that I cannot use the DvD player because I only have component inputs into my TV. Looks like the older models ddidnt support the DVI and HDMI input format. Is there some type of converter for it?

I'm willing to bet that your Mits is a CRT RPTV which as an analog display has no benefit with HDMI/DVI to component adapters. Like the previous post, stick with a good prog-scan player.

I read that there are DVD players that can upconvert component video.

Zenith DVB318 or clone LG DV7832 with older firmware. NeuNeo HVD2081 and HVD2085. Samsung DVD-HD841, HD850, HD941 and HD950 requires simple remote control hack. I have the NeuNeo HVD2081, Samsung DVD-HD950 and Zenith DVB318. The DVD-HD950 is the best in my opinion. I prefer upconversion even over component but the picture is slightly better over HDMI/DVI. I should mention the displays I have used upconversion over component are a Sony KV-30XBR910 and a Panasonic PTL-500U LCD projector. The 30" CRT benefit is very minor, the LCD projector slightly more so but still the difference with upscaling is not great even over HDMI/DVI but worthwhile for me.

The LG LDA-531 dvd player will output a 1080i signal over component cables... of course, it will not do this with a copy-protected disc, but this dvd player also has a LOAD of card slots, so any .vob .avi or .wmv file (on a card or burned to dvd) can be upconverted. I find there is a notable difference.
Now, this will probably trigger a controversy, since the main school of thought is that any signal sent over component video lines is upconverted by the tv to 1080i no matter what the input is.. Would I be right to say this is the reason that SD signals appear so crappy when viewed on a 1080i screen? So wouldn't feeding a 1080i signal from the dvd player to the comp inputs (instead of having the tv upcon for you) make more sense, in terms of PQ being at its best?

I prefer having the DVD player upscale based on the player/display combinations I have seen. I have read there is a hack to enable the LG LDA-531 to upscale over component but I don't know what it is, I think the AVSForum has the information.

My DVD player is configured to transmit 480i over Component (and not 480p) and my Toshiba displays this SD data in 540p. Can't see how upconverting 480i into 1080i (via digital connection) would be better than my 540p.
