Default HDMI with full screen DVD

Howdy,

I recently hooked up my DVD player with HDMI to a Panasonic LCD HDTV. Now movies that were previously full screen (Casablanca, Double Indemnity, etc) are now displayed at 16:9 rather than 4:3. I'm still trying to figure out if the aspect ratio of the image is off...Is this an artifact of HDMI upconversion? What's going on?

Thanks and Merry Christmas!

Jeff

I'm assuming the images are distorted when you say 16:9 considering that those DVD titles are 4:3. If so, check the output settings for both the player and TV...one of these is causing the change in AR. You should be able to set it to let the signal pass through without the ratio changing.

Even when using HD signals, most TV's let you adjust either 'wide' or 'full'.

You may have to play 4:3 DVDs at 480p to avoid having your display stretch the DVD. Many, maybe most HD displays automatically assume 720p and 1080i signals are formatted for 16:9 so unless your DVD player provides for formating 4:3 correctly on 16:9 displays at HD resolution, you won't want to play 4:3 DVDs at upscaled resolutions.

Thanks for the replies!

Swapping the resolution to 480p, then adjusting the TV's aspect ratio did the trick.
