Default Best dvd for Phillips 30pw9110d?

Hey everyone! My girlfriend (yes you heard that right) just purchased this Phillips tv for walmart for what seemed to be a pretty decent deal (little less than $600). We are currently using a slim ps2 or a xbox with component hookups to watch dvd's. We've been having problems with either player freezing up half way through movies and have decided that we should buy a new dvd player. She wants to buy an all in one dvd/vhs player but I've been trying to pull her from that technology and place her in a seperate players.

Is it worth it to buy a seperate dvd player with HDMI output or should I just fold on my quest for new technology and get a decent combo unit with component out.

Is it worth the upscalling dvd players with this model tv?

What is a decent priced dvd player that works well with this model tv?

Thanks in advance...
Dan

In general, those upconverting players are redundant, since there are equivalent upconversion chip in better HDTVs. In lowest end models, like yours, it can be a big help since the TV's upconversion is poor. Then again, your TV can display 480p natively, and there are only 480 lines on a DVD... you should probably try a cheap 480progressive scan player first...

I wouldn't buy a VCR now, unless you've got a big videotape collection...

We definetly have a huge vhs collection. She also tapes about 5 shows a week to vhs and wants to be able to watch them on her new tv. (She tapes them her room on her old tv). I've now finnaly talked her out of buying an all in one unit. What are some sudgestions on both vhs players and dvd players that would be of good quality? I'm wanting to get a dvd player with an hdmi plug in hopes that it would boost picture quality over say a svideo or component setup. Sudjestions???
