Exclamation DVD Player won't read disc!

Hey all,

I just got a new TV this past week and I hooked up my Samsung DVD-P231.

At first, I didn't have the switch for the component connection turned on so everything was red. After I got the component hooked up, it won't read the disc at all.

I get the "Cannot Read Disc" message. It does this for any connection I use, not just component.

Anyone have any ideas on how I can rectify this? It worked fine an hour earlier. Now nothing!

I was thinking about resetting the DVD player but can't find any info on how to do it?

Help Please!

TIA

Try unpluging the unit for few minutes, plug it back in and let it reboot.

Here's the exact error I receive; "the disc cannot be played"

Tried about 10 DVDs now and all the same.

First of all, wrong forum. (It should have gone in the "DVD Players" forum)
Now, are you trying to play retail DVDs that you bought from the store or are these DVD±R/RWs? (you can see what DVD formats it will play here)
Do these DVDs play fine on other players?
To reset your DVD player, try unplugging the power cord from the wall for a few minutes, and then plug it back in.
If it still will not play anything, and your DVD disks are ok, then maybe you should try taking it back to the store and have them exchange it for a new one, because this one might be defected.

Exclamation

The DVD Player forum isn't very active so thats why I posted here. I've tried burned copies and originals. No go on either.

The DVD player is almost 2 years old so not sure if they will be able to exchange it after all this time?

I had it unplugged for about an hour and no luck. CD's play fine but not DVD's so I cant figure what's going on. I figure it has to be something simple!

Any other ideas???

Thanks all!

Ok, here's the deal. Reading the Rules you will find this one:
-No double posting. Post to the correct forum only! Double posts will be deleted.

We are not fanatics about this, but when double posts are made, it is hard to keep track of the answers. Posting to wrong forums will prevent good answers in most cases. I think there should not be speed limits on the country roads and everybody should be allowed to run at whatever they think is a safe speed, but that's not the rules, so I don't speed.... too much anyway.

Like I said, your DVD player is probably broke. That is what happens to electronics, one moment it is fine and the next moment it is broke.

Thanks for the tip rbink. I only posted in the one forum and it was moved so not sure how that qualifies as double posting.

Anyway, I know that the player is "broke"(or broken) but I was just trying to see if anyone has encountered this before and if so, what they did to fix it?

Just a little weird that it plays Audio CD's (Original, CD-R, CD-RW, etc.) and not DVD's? Plus, it all started when I hooked it up to the new TV with components.

I wouldn't think the DVD player cares whether it is hooked to anything or not - it is essentially passive.

Do you get the DVD error message on the player window or the tv?

When hooked to the tv and playing a CD do you get the track number on the tv screen?

Has the player previously been able to play the discs it will now not play?

>>Yes. I have been playing discs that have been plaed before and even some from 2 days ago.
BTW - The TV is the Toshiba 34HF85

Thanks and I look forward to hearing from you.

It sounds like the player might have developed a fault. Have you tried using regular composite or s-video cables?

By the way both DVD players I have display the CD track number on the tv screen.

Did you not post elsewhere that you had a red picture?

I did post about the red picture originally but after researching, I found that there is switch on the back of my player that must be turned on in order to use the component connection.

Once I did that, I received the "regular" blue Samsung screen when loading a DVD but never got passed that.

Before I flipped the switch, it played the DVD but it had a red tint. Even the blue loading screen was red.

Now, even if I try RCA or try to switch it back, I have the same issue of "cannot read disc".

The original post was posted in two forums:

High Definition Receivers, Recorders, Players, Tivo's
High Definition DVD
If you look in those two forums you will see the moved titles. I merged the two threads together and moved the resulting thread to this forum. That is why there is a duplicate post at the beginning of this thread. Merging the two original posts maintained the answers for both posts.
