Default Legacy player... Decisions... Decisions...

I am new to this forum, but not new to audio/video equipment.

Having just lost out on a Marantz DV-7600 I am reeling to find a replacement. LONG story, but basically I got bid sniped at the last second of the auction. I would have most certainly paid more than the final $150 winning price, which included the shipping..

Please tell me that there are better DVD players in the $150-$200 price range!! I am really disappointed!

I've been a fan of Marantz products for years and currently own one of their 'audiophile' CD players. Its a Marantz CC-4000OSE. Its a remarkable player. As good as anything for CD audio in a standalone unit. I am looking for this fidelity along with a great universal player that will play anything that I toss at it.

I have a Pioneer ELITE DV-C36, the video is great as I allow the TV to do the upconverting to 720p. However, I'd like an upconverting DVD player with HDMi out.

Of the models I've been looking at I am most interested in the Denon DVD-2910, Oppo DV-980H, and Sony DVP-NS3100ES.

I would consider a blu-ray player, but all the ones I've tried in the $200-$400 price range are disappointing to say the least. Waiting to save up money for a PS3.

Any thoughts! Thanks!

My vote goes for the Oppo DV-980H, you just can't find much better especially in that price range.

Will the Oppo rival the sound quality of the Marantz DVD player?

Sounds good, what are your thoughts on the Pioneer ELITE DV-C36?

I don't have any experience with the Marantz DV-7600 or Sony DVP-NS3100ES but I own the Denon DVD-2910 and Oppo DV-980H and the Oppo is the better player in my opinion for audio and video. I am using the DVD-2910 connected by analog 5.1 in my secondary system and like it well enough but like the DV-980H even better. The replacement model, Denon DVD-2930, is available at closeout prices and might be worth consideration but I feel the DVD-980H is likely the better overall player and better value even compared to the closeout price. The DV-980H does SACD and DVD-A over HDMI for decoding by an attached HDMI 1.2a audio processor if that is of interest. I have never used a DVD-2930 and would refer you to others that have if you do want to consider it.

Unless you have a bias against Blu-ray, I would say it is time to buy Blu-ray and not mess with a player that doesn't include Blu-ray. D&M and Oppo are the only two companies making Blu-ray/SACD/DVD-A/DVD-V/CD players if you need all of those formats and only Oppo is in my price range. If you don't care about SACD/DVD-A, there are a lot of options at great prices. Since the Sony player you are considering doesn't include DVD-A, I assume you aren't requiring that.

I meant to comment on this but forgot. I don't understand how this can ever happen. I have never lost an auction where I was willing to pay more. I always bid late in the auction and bid the price I am willing to pay. If I win at or below my bid, I am happy. If I lose because I was sniped, the winner paid more than I was willing to pay so I move on to the next item of interest. I see similar complaints and wonder how can this situation you mention happen so often? Does everybody try to win with a very low price and hope their low price is the highest low price? I can't follow the logic. I admit to bidding low prices on a lot of auctions but I never come back and regret not bidding more.

I got outbid seemingly after the auction ended. With 2 secs left I was the high bidder... Seems I can find a better player anyways ...

I have tried at LEAST 5 Blu-Ray players already... Sony, Hitachi, Panasonic, Samsung. . . All of them are garbage for DVD playback... and mediocre at best for Blu-Ray. Nothing yet compares to a PS3 for Blu-Ray playback. At least not to my eyes in the $500 and under price range.

Most of all, NONE of them sounded good for CD's. And not to mention the latency is soo annoying... I'm guessing I'm gonna have to pay $1500+ to get the performance of my Pioneer Elite for DVD and CD playback.. And nothing I've tried comes close to the Marantz CC-4000OSE for CD playback. At least no DVD or Blu-Ray players.

I just want something that can play everything and through HDMi. So far, nothing has done better than my Panasonic Plasma at upconverting.

I don't have a large Blu-Ray selection, and I am waiting for a bit to see if the format will stay. DVD's are still outselling Blu-Ray 5 to 1, and the margin is getting wider everyday.

The Oppo BDP-83 at $500 will rock your world. Fast load times, the best DVD upconversion around and Blu ray movies are stunning. It also plays DVD Audio and SACD. If you see one, and hear one, you will walk away with it.

You might try the Oppo BDP-83. It is $500 and if you aren't happy, Oppo has a great return policy and customer service. Performance for all formats is excellent in my opinion but your requirements may be more demanding than mine based on your comments.

How does the Blu-Ray playback compare to the PS3?

Is there any real need for HDMi and an upconverting player? Or will my Pioneer Elite work just fine?

Better, especially with SD DVD upconversion. It is rated one of the best Blu-ray players no matter the price...
