I own both the PS3 and Oppo BDP-83 and consider those the two best media players I have ever owned. I have never seen any comparison with a claim that the PS3 has better Blu-ray video quality. The only claims I have seen made are that the BDP-83 is better for Blu-ray. I can tell no difference in Blu-ray video quality between the two. The BDP-83 is better for DVD-V and CD in my opinion but I could use either player for all formats each handles without complaint. Both media players do a lot for the money but at $300, I think the PS3 is an amazing deal considering all it does. Oppo can't sell players at a loss like Sony does with the PS3 since Sony hopes to make it up with PS3 accessories, services and games while Oppo has to make their business model work with hardware profits.

Oppo has designed a high quality player and it is a good value but based on value alone compared to the $300 PS3, I would have to say the PS3 is unequalled once again. Of course the players are intended for different markets and the Oppo BDP-83 does a lot the PS3 doesn't do and the reverse is true also.

It got lost in the thread, thought I'd ask again...

Is there any real need for HDMi and an upconverting player? Or will my Pioneer Elite work just fine?

HDMI will deliver 1080p24, component is limited to 1080i. Upconversion usually does a pretty good job, depending on the player. In some cases it is well worth it particularly if you have a large DVD collection.
Upconversion is only available via HDMI

It will work just fine but I prefer to have the player upscale. I think you will find an improvement with an upscaling player like the Oppo BDP-83.

My thoughts exactly, but none of the upscaling players have done a better job than my TV. Just having bad luck with Blu-Ray players thus far... another reason why I think Blu-Ray is doomed for failure. All the players $500 and under are garbage with the exception of the PS3.

I'm keeping my Pioneer for my general purpose player, and going after a PS3 or Oppo Blu-Ray... if the upscaling is just as good, why not go for a blu-ray player?
