I'm trying to get as much of my family room set-up thought out as I can before I move into a new house at the end of August. The new house has a media closet and is pre-wired to the TV space and all of the speakers.
There are a couple things I know I need to get (a receiver that can handle HDMI switching, etc), but I'm not exactly sure what my remote situation needs to be. I currently have a Harmony 880 with all of my components and TV out in the open. Here's my understanding of the differences. . . please correct me if I'm wrong: 880: Will need to buy a standalone IR blaster that has a receiving unit I'll place near the TV. Will put the IR repeaters in the closet. Would I need to place a repeater on each component or just one at the top of the closet door? 890: If I upgrade to the 890 it's basically the exact same as the 880, it just has a RF capabilities and comes with an RF-->IR unit that I'll place in the closet. Same question as above - would I need to have one for each component or just one for the entire closet. One: Updated and upgraded IR version and I would still need to buy an IR blaster (same as the 880). One thing to add . . in the wiring scheme, there is what looks like an Ethernet jack behind the TV and in the media closet that is labeled "IR". Any clue what that is and how I would use it? Thanks!

You would probably be best off going with the 890. it comes with the RF>IR and has I think 4 IR blasters that you hook up to the IR spot on the front of your equipment.

I had the same question and just purchased the 890. It should be waiting for me when I get home from work. The RF receiver goes in the closet and transfers the RF signal to IR that travels to the wires / emitters placed over the IR reeciver of each component. The 890 comes with 4 emitters, but i believe it can accommodate many more components.

I set up the 890 last night. Took a little while and the instructions ate not great, but the remote and rf extender work great. It comes with four ir emitters that have two heads, I.e. Eight components. Highly recommended. Gonna customize it tonight.
