Default Program Remote to Control Fireplace

I have gas fireplace and the remote broke. Someone at work said I might be able to progam my cable remote control which now controls my cable box an sony tv. On my remote it has a cable button and tv button that i used to set up those devices. I think he was thinking there might be an aux button that I could try to set it up. Its a Scentific Atlantic remote from Cablevision, any ideas? I tried searching a web for a replacement but all the ones listed were overseas models. I was thinking of just buying a universal remote and see if that works. I just use it to turn on and off it does not control the flame . Do u think the universal would work, TIA!

You would probably need a universal remote that has settings for the fireplace in its memory, which may be hard to find. If your desperate you could go through all the codes in the book to see if any will fire the right signal for the power on the fireplace. Only other option is something Z-wave which someone with more expertise may explain as my setup hasn't gotten that far yet.

You'll need a learning remote, there are some at Radio Shack that can do it on the cheap. But you just need to get the original remote from a friend or do what I did when the dog had crewed my TV remote order it program the new one and put the order one in a safe place.

This one might be better for as you can talk to it and it will turn stuff on and off..

The problem you might have with a gas fireplace is that most fireplaces I have seen use RF (radio frequency) remotes not IR (infared). While IR signals can be learned RF signals cannot. If your fireplace uses RF signals you can only get the remote from the original manufacturer.

If by chance the fireplace does use IR a learning remote can be used however you will probably need a working original manufacturer remote to train the learning remote.
