How can anyone watch standard def?

Direct TV remote codes needed
My daughter has an Emerson non HD TV with a Direct TV HD DVR. We tried the codes that came up on the screen to program the TV but so far all we can get to work is the channel and on-off controls. We would like to able to control the volume also. Does anyone have any suggestions as to where I might find what I need?

I punched the channel up buttom as instructed from one of the Direct TV sites and still nothing seems to work. The one thing I found odd is that they state there are a possible 16 codes to try but only 5 come up on the screen. This may sound stupid but how do I access the other codes that are suggested?
