Default Sony Commander Universal Remote

I have a Sony Commander universal remote that I've had for about 6 or 7 years. I actually quit using it years ago, because I would switch out a component or a TV here and there and it became a hassle to reprogram.

Within the past year I've purchase a Vizio SV420XVT LCD, I now have the Directv HR20 receiver, Magnavox NB500MG9 blu-ray player and the Pioneer VSX 819H-K a/v receiver.

I haven't tried to reprogram my remote yet with all of these components and wanted to get some feedback before I do. It does have a learn feature, but I think it's only for each function (ex: volume, channel), not the whole component. Am I wasting my time trying to program this remote? My concern is that Vizio isn't even listed in the codes (they weren't a company yet) and even though Magnavox is listed, it's in the DVD section, since blu-ray didn't exist.

If it's possible, where can I get updated codes? If it's not, what is a good, cheap universal with a simple setup for my home theater?

Thanks in advance!

You could try the sony style page and click the service tab and find your information from the source.

I chatted with someone at Sony and he informed that the only way to get the remote to work is the "learn" method. I want something that controls everything with a code.

So, anyone have suggestions on a new remote? I don't have a large budget at this time, so no $100 remotes.

I've briefly looked at some online, but I guess I'm looking for some advice from forum members about models they like.

I'm glad I read your post. I just bought a Sony Remote Commander RM-VL610. When I got home I proceeded to program it. My tv(Panasonic) and Satellite receiver(Dish Network VIP211K) programmed fine, When I tried to program my Blu-ray player(Sony BDP-S360) it would not program. I contacted Sony and they told me that Blu-ray players are not programmable(no codes). I could make it learn, but that would involve learning every button on the Blu-ray remote and that's just too much of a hassle.

It's really a shame because the remote commander is very nice.

I imagine all your components will program fine with the exception being the Blu-ray player unless you want to make it learn every button. It's also a possibility your tv will not program either

Logitech makes great remotes and they have a huge database. They cost more than your budget when they're new, but you can find deals or buy a refurbished one.

BTW, I just checked the Logitech database and your tv and blu-ray player are in their database.

Hope this helps.

Regards
Bob
