Angry SONY WEGA color problem

I have a KF-50WE610 since 2004. Recently the color appears mostly in blue. The color menu can't correct the problem. Is this a costly fix?

You have a faulty light engine. Sony extended the warranty on the WE models but I believe it recently expired. I'm not sure of the cost because mine was covered. Call some tv repair shops and get estimates.

I would recommend calling Sony before you do anything else.

Yes call Sony. If it is faulty due to poor design/mfg (which it is since they extended coverage), they should still cover it with enough friendly pressure.

Good luck!

Hi,I also have a Sony tv and its doing the same thing exept mine is both the blue chip and the green chip. What's happening is that 3 chips that create the colors for the tv are melting .They dont sell the chips by themselves, you got to buy the whole light engine.I am waiting for that part to arrive from the tvs that we fix here so I can replace those two chips. That way i'll be saving hundreds of dollars.

Default I took the advice............

And called Sony. Even though I'd been given the impression that the Optical Block on my KDF42WE655 TV was out of warranty I called and Sony said they were going to fix it free! Apparently the Warranty has been extended again. I called a local service company and they will fix it as soon as they get authorization from Sony.
While it won't "fix" the engineering or mfg defects in the product, it'll get us another 2-5 years hopefully before we have to go spend another pile of money on another TV.

The support page for your KDF42WE655 on the Sony web site indicates that the only warranty extension is for the warped lamp door problem--not the optical block. Could you provide more details on your experience? This would affect thousands of other customers with 2004 model year Grand WEGA's who have faulty optical blocks. Also, please see my informational web site on Sony optical block problems for additional information.

I did see that page. The call to Sony ended in a statement that they were going to pay to fix it and then gave me two phone numbers in the local area to call for service. He explained that their service entity did not service the area so I had to call these guys. When I did they said they would contact Sony for confirmation etc, I didn't get a confirmation number from the Sony guy I spoke to, probably should have. I did get a followup e-mail with an "event number" on it so I do have a reference. I have heard nothing from the service company I called so I'll give them a follow-up call on Monday.

Called Sony this a/m. Very disappointed!! The person I talked to this time informed me that the person I talked to last time was in error, there is no extension on the optical block for the KDF-42WE655 model but there is for the 50, 55, and 60.
I asked to speak to a supervisor and got, after a 30 min hold, a person in the Phillipines who "reviewed" my case and stated that there was no warranty extension on my set, that it had expired in Dec 08. When I asked why the were extending the warranty on the rest of the line but not the 42" she told me there was no extension on them either. I tried to get another "level" of service number or e-mail address to talk to but was simply told that I was at the end of the line. She finally simply kept repeating that I wasn't covered and my only recourse was to call a local service company to have it fixed at my expense.
Anyone have any suggestions?
Ron
