Hello, first time to this forum.
My Wife and Children were watching TV on our Samsung HL-P5063W. They tell me they saw a flash and the screen lost color. I came to look and the picture was black and white and it sounded like the fan got much louder. I powered it down and powered it back up and it took a while to get the picture back, but it was still black and white and still something like a fan was much louder. Also, the green lamp light was on, on the power button. I called the company that I got an extended warranty with and they tell me that with the policy that I got that the lamp wasn't covered and it was the lamp that has gone bad. BUT, would I still get a picture if the lamp had gone out? Could it actually be the color wheel? Thanks in advance for any and all feedback. You may see this thread in front projections forum... I put in the wrong place. |

I think you are right, it does sound more like the color wheel. If you know how to look inside the tv you can see the color wheel and if it's broken, that's it. Otherwise, tell the warranty company to come check it, that's what you paid them for.

Does it still have normal brightness in black & white?
If so, it's not the lamp. Call for service.

Well wanted everyone to know what is going on this my TV and the extended warranty company.
After dozens of calls and emails to this extended warranty company, they finally send a company out to take a look at the TV. The company then sends to price to fix the TV to the warranty company and they are to accept the charges or deny them. After dozens of more calls to figure out what they want to do... They tell me that the cost to repair the TV is more then the TV is worth and have given me three options. 1. They will replace my TV with a refurbished RCA M50WH187, I have to pay for the cost of shipping my TV to them. Has anyone heard of this TV? I haven't seen any positive posting about this set or RCA. 2. Pay me $389.00 for the TV, but I have to ship to their recycle center (again, I have to pay for shipping). 3. Keep the TV and they cut me a check for $340.00. I feel as I am getting the short end of this deal. |

How much did you pay for the extra warranty? Not that it matters... but their offer is so low.. it's almost like they're ripping everyone off.
1) unacceptable... you bought 1 brand, and they want to switch out with another hard luck case... and get you to pay shipping? 2)$389 + shipping so they can make this into another hard case for the next guy...? don't muddy the water. 3)I'll bet the cheque isn't even close to the repair, in fact sounds like the extra warranty price... This is what courts are for.... just about everyone in the courtroom will be on your side and you will receive proper compensation. (read cash). Sometimes in life we called upon to go that one step further and justify why these systems exist. I suggest a legal letter outlining your demands (with all costs) and the hint of legal action might produce a better response and if I were you, I wouldn't just settle for a full repair, from these people who have already proven themselves to be unworthy of honoring a warranty but a full refund.. |

Thanks for the reply AH802. I have legal service and I will run the warranty by them and see what my legal options are. Is there a Kelley blue book for these TVs? How do they come up with $389.00?

They probably figure out value, by what they think they can get away with. If you bought this at Costco you would have a full refund. I suspect you thought you were purchasing a product that would last 5+ years minimum with some reasonable expectation of 7-10 years. So from my point of view, the set has performed around 20% of it's expectation... so realistically I would be looking for 80% of the purchase value + shipping and your warranty premium; considering the difficulty, and an additional 20% for the trials and tribulations they're forcing on you. In other words... a full refund of the original purchased price.

This situation sounds funny to me. We service lots of Samsung DLP sets for colour wheel issues. Usually they are just noisy but sometime the wheel breaks but the hub is free to turn so the set works but without colour.
I have never had an extended warranty company BER (beyond economical repair) a set for this problem. The part is around $100. and I do this repair in the customers home in under an hour. I'm guessing the servicer doesn't know what is wrong and has submitted an estimate for a light engine. It would be interesting to know who gets the set for scrap if you accept their dreadful settlement offer. Hope it works out for you! |
