Unhappy Should I stick with DLP or move on? Opinions please

I'm very frustrated this morning because after 3 years, the color wheel on my Samsung HLP4663 has died. Technology aside, I think it's crap that $1,800 got me a tv that lasted 3 years. Yes, we can all argue specifics about which component of the whole died, but at the end of the day I'm very disappointed in the experience.

So I'm shopping for new TVs and the question is - do I stick with DLP, knowing that the color wheel will likely die every 3 years, or do I move on to a different technology like Plasma or LCD....

I'd be interested in hearing your opinions on the subject.

IMO, I would definately look into either plasma or LCD. Both have come down in price a bit to lower the price gap between flat panel and DLP since you purchased yours. I have a plasma and think the PQ is better vs every DLP I have ever seen. Not saying DLP does not produce an excellent HD picture, just not as good as plasma or LCD IMHO. And things like viewing angles and stuff are not a factor with plasma and (most of the LCD on the market today). And the big factor is all those moving parts and bulbs that DLP are well known for issue (as you well know). DLP is still the cheapest when going over 50'' vs flat panels, but well worth it. Since I think your current DLP is a 46'', perhaps a nice Panasonic 50'' plasma will fit the bill like this 1..

BTW.. How much did they quote you to fix the color wheel???

If you have ever worked inside a computer, you can replace the color wheel yourself for less than $200 and your tv will be fine. Many owner's have done the repair themselves with perfect results. We just had a discussion about it here:

Samsung started replacing the HLP series of DLPs with a air bearing color wheel because of this problem the OP has had with them. He might want to check with Samsung as to whether they will at least provide the replacement air bearing color wheel for free, as this is a known issue with them.

And about that link all I can say is WOW!!!!!!!!

I bought that exact same display for $1,300.00 in May and love it but I got it at Best Buy through a price matching, that netted me a $900.00 discount to reach that $1,300.00 price. Now this link shows the price at only $1,143.00.

I guess Panasonic is clearing inventory for the newer models expected this fall sometime. That price is an amazing price if it includes shipping and is an EXCELLENT display.

Default Thank you for the feedback

I've decided I'm moving to LCD and probably going with the Samsung LN46A550.

I apprecaite the input.

If anyone is in Georgia and wants my DLP, let me know. :-)
