Question Panasonic PT-47WX53G HD tv question

Hi Guys,

I am new here, and have been wondering a couple of things for a while now. So I found this HD forum and figured it would be a great place to ask.

Anyway...I have a panasonic 47 inch rear projection HD tv.(pt-47wx53g) I love it, and have never had any problems with it. I currently have dishnetwork with an HD reciever and get my local channels, plus the HD programming.

My question is this..why should I pay for my local digital/hd channels, when I COULD BE receiving them OTA on an HD attenna???? My next question is this, with my Panny tv, does it already have a digital tuner in it, and so all I would need is the HD antenna, or would I need a set top box to receive my local digital stations??

Hope somebody can point me in the right direction

Thanks for your time
Dan

Welcome to the forum. Did a search on your TV not really able too find any info. worth while. Your right no need to pay for locals if they can be received with a OTA. HD tuner in your set is all you should need. Should say in your owners manual. If you don't get any good info here why not call Pan. and ask a CSR.

Rhino, thanks for the adivce. I found my instruction manual online, and did some reading. Anway, here is the info I found.
Digital Scan Rate: 1080i
NTSC Line Doubler: 480p
CHannel capability 181, VHF-12, UHF-56, Cable 113.

"This television is capable of displaying 1080i and 480p DTV signals when connected to a DTV tuner (stb).

This television also utilizes a progressive scan doubler, which de-interlaces the NTSC signal, and progressivlely scans the image"

Ok, so I take that to mean, that my TV needs a set top box to receive digital and HD programs from OTA?? Is that correct?

Thanks
Dan

Yes, that is correct as your TV does not have an ATSC digital tuner. I have a similar model, the 53" and I just use my Dish network ViP622 to tune the OTA channels and it looks excellent!

Loves2watch...how do you like your 53"...when did you get it? I got mine about 4 years ago, and occassionally run the convergence and sucn, otherwise, I am very happy with my Panny, and it's picture. I've never had a lick of trouble with my 47"

I am thinking of replacing my old zenith 19 inch tv up in our living room with something a bit bigger, definitely a wide screen, and probably flat panel. Not quite sure what to get yet, but with the digital days coming, I want to upgrade my tv so I won't need a set top box up there.

I love my Panny projection and it gives me the film like quality I look for when watching movies. Only projection sets can give you that look. I will keep it and repair it until there are no parts available. That's how much I like it.

As for a new flat panel, stick with Panasonic and check out their plasma TV's. The best picture for the money, hands down.
