Default RCA Noise Issue

OK, I need some help here. Best Buy extended warranty wants to replace the entire light engine in my RCA HD50LPW42 DLP set because of a noisy color wheel. The wheel has been replaced twice under warranty. It seems to last a year before going bad. I know RCA color wheels are a problem, but this is the only issue with this set. I want them to just replace the color wheel, but they will not do that. The problem is, that the light engine is on indefinite back order, so who knows when it will be replaced. How will replacing the light engine take care of the color wheel noise. I'm confused, and getting an answer out of the service tech that looked at the set was impossible. Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't the color wheel the only moving part in the light engine. As I said before there are not any other issues with this set, the picture is beautiful, it's just the annoying noise. Someone please enlighten me.... Somehow I feel I'm being jerked around. Thanks

I tend to agree. but is there is not a clause in your warranty to compensate you if repairs become a prolonged process due to unavailability of parts?
It's possible the color wheel is part of the whole optic assembly, but obviously it's been replaced before as a separate component.
You might consult an independent repair tech just for the information.

Default RCA Noise Issue

A independent repair service replaced the first two color wheels. Best Buy now uses their own "techs". The problem is the tech from BEST Buy did not turn on the reciever to bring up the picture, he only turned on the TV and "assumed" that the light engine was bad. Best Buy refuses to send another "tech" to take another look. People do make mistakes, but apparantly Best Buy thinks their people do not. If you can believe this, I was told by a Best Buy rep, that their "techs" are so well trained that they can tell what is wrong with a set, without coming to look at it. They are so good they can diagnose a problem over the phone. This "tech" was so good he forgot to bring the picture up on the TV. Yes the color wheel is a replaceable part of the light engine, in fact it took the service tech that replaced the first two, about 15 minutes. I am a technician for a heating service company and I do know what it takes to diagnose a problem. The color wheel is a relatively easy replacement on this set, but since I have an extended warranty, I am not going to budge until it is repaired to my satisfaction. Since this is the fourth repair on this set, I will probably ask for a replacement, under Best Buys "lemon" policy, if this not resolved very shortly. My initial call for service was made on Oct. 3rd. Yea, I'm getting jerked around.

Good luck with all that unkster! I don't envy you. If anything is worse than no service, it's bad service.
I hope BB comes to their senses.

They should think of entering these techs with ESP into talent shows.

Default RCA Noise

OK, so Best Buy decided to give me a store credit to replace the set. It's not what I wanted to do, but since they insist the color wheel is not a replaceable item, (which it is) I'll take the new set. Any recomendations on what I should look at. I really liked the picture quality on the RCA DLP except for the noisy color wheels. I looked at a Panasonic 50" Plasma, Model # TH-50PX75U and was impressed with both the SD and HD pictures. Any thoughts on this

Hate to break it to you, but pretty much any set now is better than the RCA DLP.

The Panasonic 50" plasma is a great choice.

Yea, I know, but when I purchased this set 4 yrs ago, the picture quality for a DLP was better than everything else I looked at. The picture quality is still excellent, but the nagging problems are what has done it in. Thanks for the input on the Panasonic

Best Buy has decided to replace the set, rather than put in a light engine, which is does not need. After numerous telephone calls and E-mails, I am tired of fighting with them, so I will be swaping it out for a Plasma set. I have pretty much decided on a Samsung HPT 5054. Wish me luck, as this is the third swap since I originally purchased a Toshiba back in '04, which was a major problem from the get go. I'm sure Best Buy just hopes I go away and never come back.........

Toshiba? Where did that enter the picture?

The RCA, replaced a Toshiba, which I only had for three weeks, and two breakdowns. I guess I tried to forget about that one. I hope I live long enough to see the "new" technology become reliable. My old CRT, JVC 27" is still going strong after 18 yrs.

Stories like this and my encounters with DLP make me never want one. Shame, since a person can get a 70"+ screen for half of flat panel.

It seems to me that the manufacturers should be able to find a bearing for the color wheel that lasts longer than 8-12 months. Or maybe they don't want to. Theres a lot of money to be made in replacing parts. Anyway, no more moving parts for me.....
