Arrow What will I get from upgrading CRT to LCD???

Ok so just when I though my Sony 57" Rear Projection CRT was the best buy out there, and I got it, out come the DLP and LCD sets. Now I feel as if I didn't quite do my homework before making this purchase. My question is this, if I decide to shell out the extra $3000 for a Sony LCD set, what advantages will I gain in overall picture quality? When I look at LCD sets they seem a little brighter and vibrant in the color department, but then again I hear black levels etc. look better on CRT based sets. I have pretty much ruled out DLP based sets as the fan noise is a turn off. Although I don't know if they perform better than LCD technolgy, do they? Any help or links to info would be greatly appreciated!

well you are going to get a lot of different opinions on here about what is "better". Personally what I would do is go to a store that has all of the technologies and look and see for yourself. Here is the basic break down:

LCD RP
Screen Door Effect
Blacks not that good

DLP RP
Rainbow effect (for some people)
Fans
Colour wheel Long term relibility?

Personally, my new TV is coming in the next week or so. I ended up with the panasonic 50" DLP. On most LCD RP i could see the screen door effect from my viewing distance so it was more of a show stopper then the rainbow effect (which i didn't see in store). But don't let anyone tell you what to get - do your research and then look at them in store and make up yoru own mind.

Oh and for CRT RP - i didn't have the space and wanted something smaller in cabinet size.

With either lcd or dlp technology vs crt: no convergence problems, hence more consistently sharp picture without spending extra bucks for isf tech to do convergence adjustment on your tv.

I agree go with what fits your application and what you think is the best picture. Just make sure to visit several stores and view the same models you may be interested in as they probably are all adjusted differently. Don't think about what you buy today becoming obsolete. The way HD is progressing all of our current sets will be old timers in 2 years. Sony has come out with their 70" RPTV 1920 X 1081i. By Q4 of 2005 or Q1 2006 expect to see that chip in their 50" and 60" models. I dont expect Mit's, Panasonic or samsung to just sit there. The next 2 years should be very interesting.
IMO
