Default LG 52sx4d will not power on

Several weeks ago my display powered up then went off with a blinking lamp light. The description of the light is that there is a problem with the lamp or near by.

I purchased a new lamp since the old one was in service for 18months. I thought that the lamp had in fact went out.

After installing the new lamp the display worked for 2 days then reverted to the same problem. This time I noticed that when the display first powered on it said "no signal" for several seconds although there was a signal and the display seemed to be somewhat grainy with very little horozontal vibrations. Then went off with the blinking lamp light.

I removed the lamp, checked it to be good put it back in and everything was fine again for about a week.

Last night the display went dead again with same symptoms. This time I cannot get it to come back.

Question is this, has anyone else experienced the same issue, or know what the problem could be. I am not a repairman, but have fixed/replaced/soldered electrical components before when competently directed as to which parts are suspect. I cannot afford to have a tech look at this display. I already shelled out $280 for a lamp that was not dead, and probably need to replace another couple hundred dollars in components, and the additional 2-3 hundred that a repair shop would charge me would put me in the poor house.

Thanks a bunch.

No technical guru here whatsover.

Having said that, you may have a bad lamp ballast, which could sometimes produce the same symptoms as a bad lamp under some circumstances.

I did a quick google for an available online service manual for your set and came up dry. Don't know if they are available to consumers for LG's. They are for many other sets. Did find this:

http://www.fixya.com/support/t142353-lamp_fine_but

You may also want to try to track down a poster on this forum with screen name BamaPanda. He states he is an LG rep. Perhaps he would have a suggestion.

As for the extra lamp you now own, not a bad idea to have it. They tend to go bad at the worst of all possible times.

Good luck.

I replaced the ballast and display still has same problem.

I have further diagnosed the problem as follows.

The display will come on with persistant back to back attempts. After coming on the display while showing the menu screen, will change to a flickering blue and then the flickers will decrease in frequency, and then display switches off with the red flashing lamp bulb.

A couple of times I was able to get the set to come on normally, but it requires many repeted power ups in rapid succession.

It almost seems like the color wheel is not spinning up or is, but then slows down.

Could this be a power supply problem or the color wheel?

I purchased the service manual, but it only explains how to adjust the display, and provides no data for servicing. The schematics are equally as worthless, since there is minimal voltage information.

In addition to possible advice on the issue itself, does anyone know the output voltage of the power supply to both the Ballast and the colorwheel?

Thumbs up Doctor In The House

Yep: the input to the ballast is about 300vdc..coming from the power supply or dmd mod depending on model ect,,and yes they are exp,to work on but it's the tech baby if the lamp goes out to soon, if you change it it's your baby..in the long run call a rep/TECH,AND LET THEM WORRY ABOUT FIXING IT..BE PATIENT AND GOOD LUCK//THE DOC..

I found a failure mode of my LG 52sx4D. Sometimes it can turn on and sometimes it will not, giving red LED blink indicating the light engine. It turns out that the color wheel is failing. It becomes difficult to start spinning at certain random positions. If I give it a little tap with a screw driver on the color wheel housing (the aluminium block next to the lamp fan), it helps to "kick start" it. Once it spins, the lamp will turn on and everything becomes OK. My guess is that the bearing is failing or it might have gathered too much dust and becomes difficult to start. The wheel spins at very high RPM. When turned off, I can hear weak grinding sound of the wheel indicating some sort of mechanical failure.

Hi,yes it does sound like its time to replace it since its beginning to go bad.Let me know if cleaning the dust helps. But since its making that grind sound it sounds that its about to go bad.Good luck and God bless you!

I believe those LG DLPs have air bearings for the color wheel so you might try buying canned air and blowing the wheel all over and try to get it to spin with the airflow to loosen what ever is causing this. It may work to solve the problem. Just do not do it too long at once as you can release fluids if you blow air out of the canned air for too long. Do it 3 or 4 times after stopping for 10 seconds between tries. Also make sure it is unplugged when you do it.

Good luck!
