Question Samsung HL-P4674W vs. Toshiba 44NHM84

The Samsung HL-P4674W (shown with optional TV stand)

The Toshiba 44NHM84

I like BOTH these rear projection DLP sets, especially for their slim (less than 41" width), almost borderless screens. But ... I can't figure out why the Toshiba is over $1000 less than the Samsung (?).

The Samsung is the better looking of the two, but I can paint the silver speaker cover on the Toshiba to look just as nice. The Samsung has a 2" bigger screen and has a cableCARD slot. It also has a few more connections than the Toshiba, but BOTH have the latest HD2+ chip and DVI connections. To help with the comparison, the best web sites I've found so far are the following:
Samsung HL-P4674W
Toshiba 44NHM84

The best retail price so far in the Seattle are is $3099 at GoodGuy's or Magnolia Hi-Fi ... and Video Only has the Toshiba for $1999. For the $$, I'm leaning towards the Toshiba ... unless one of you can tell me why the Samsung is worth the extra $$.

Thanks in advance!

I've been doing a lot of research on the Samsung unit as well. I wasn't aware of the Toshiba, so I'll check it out. You may want to validate the CableCard slot on the 4674. I don't think it has one. I've been hearing conflicting stories, but Samsung's site has a listing that in March, they will offer a 4677 model that will include a CableCard slot as well as an integrated tuner. From what I understand, there is a lot of pressure to require all manufacturers to make integrated tuners manditory by summer. I'll let you know if I find major differences between Samsung and Toshiba.

Default Toshiba 44" vs Samsung 46" 2005 MODS

So, does anyone have a final oppinion as to which unit is the better unit or the better buy?

I would greatly appreciate your input.

Thanks

The toshiba has a better PQ and you could get it for less plus this Samsung series may still be at risk for lip-syn issues, isn't the choice obvious?

I couldn't justify the price difference of the Samsung, so l bought the Toshiba 44NHM84. This happened last February and my wife and I couldn't be happier! Not sure if this exact model is still available, but I'm sure a comparable one should be. I've noticed the prices are about $500 lower now and most include the HD tuner.

Here's a picture of our entertainment center with the Toshiba ...

That is an actual HD broadcast picture on the screen.

Again, we're really happy with our choice. I tell everyone that watching our Toshiba is like looking at a continuous postcard!

Since you asked, IMO if you have narrowed it down to a couple of sets, the best way to choose is go by what you like to look at the best (picture/set looks/etc) and what you will feel more comfortable with. Obviously both are within your workable budget, so buy the one you like the most. If you have to 'justify' or rationalize the choice, that will always come back to haunt you. They're both good sets, buy what you like the best, spec sheet be damned.
