What is HD?

I have a Samsung hln507w manufactured October 2003 purchased December 2003. 3 days ago the picture appeared compressed. I've also compared the picture from the xbox 360.
There are black vertical strips about 5 inches wide on both the left and right sides. The HD pictures are cut off on both sides. For instance on TNT HD in the bottom right where the circle TNT logo is, I see the left third of the circle and the first "T" of TNT. On the left side there are also portions of the picture, titles, logos cut off. There is about 10% of the display missing on both ends, on both the HD digital cable signal and the xbox360 signal, both come in on the Component cables. A DVD input on the DVI cable displays the entire width of the picture. This is NOT a formatting/menu issue, which is what the Samsung and Comcast "tech support" people try to tell me. The HD picture is there in the right size, but actually missing strips of the picture off the left and the right sides. Comcast has sent a signal to reset my box twice, but the problem is also there on the other component input on the xbox360, which I confirmed is set for widescreen 1080i signal. I have no formatting menu on this cable box, but as I said it isn't a format or Aspect issue. This model of late 2003 does not have HDMI connectors, and if I connect the cable box with DVI cable it displays that the TV does not accept that format (HDCP I think). Is there any track record with a similar symptom from anybody else? I had a 3 year warranty which expired 4 months ago (right on schedule, eh?). Can this be repaired? Samsung gave me a number to a local private repair facility but they have not called me back. I've been looking at a new model Samsung 50" Plasma HP-T5054 whose price is sinking to $1999 on Circuit City online and looks fantastic. My cable box does not have a HDMI output but I suppose I could change that out at Comcast okay. Any help with experience on repair? |

If your STB is a Scientific Atlanta box try pressing the "#" button on the remote multiple times to cycle through the aspect ration mode in the STB. Also try cycling through the aspect/format modes on the HDTV also once you are sure the STB is at "Normal" aspect ration.
I am not sure what you mean when you say: " A DVD input on the DVI cable displays the entire width of the picture." But I assume that you have a DVD player hooked up to the DVI input and you DO get a widescreen picture that covers the whole screen without the pillar bars. If that is the case, try using the component outputs of that DVD player and hook them to the inputs used for both the STB & xbox. If you then gat the black pillar bars on the sides with it then the component inputs are broken. Good luck!

I have the same issue with a 42" Samsung rear projection TV (2004 model) and both my cable company and Samsung have said it is a formatting error. All of my aspect ratios have been checked, I have cycled through them numerous times.
After getting rid of the cable company and installing Dish I still have this problem. Again, all settings are correct and I have cycled through the aspect ratio and using the "*" button does not fix the problem. Could this be an issue with the bulbs in the TV? A good example of the problem is when watching ESPN on the bottom right side if the screen it says ESPN HD. The "D" is cut off on the screen. |

Hi,it sounds like the DMD board(its composed of a microchip that carries around 2 million pixels that tilt either off or on,that chip basically its what creates the image)when that is bad you'll get color discoloration, picture will look pixilated, you'll get vertical or horizontal lines. One way to make sure its the DMD board, its to set the tv"s menu and if menu looks bad its for sure that.If menu looks ok its most likely the digital board, good luck with that.
