Default Bad Pixels - How common are they?

In examining the question of ordering over the web or going to a brick and morder store, to me it comes down to a bet on what I think the odds are of having a problem. Is it worth the price differential to have someplace to go if something is wrong. And the answer is determined by what the price difference is (which is easy to calculate) and the chances that something will go wrong (which is very difficult to calculate).

With an LCD RP TV the most commonly mentioned problem is a bad pixel. So my question then is, how common are bad pixels on modern TVs? Do 1 in 3 have a problem and its a real crap shoot? 1 in 10 so most don't but a good number do? 1 in 100 or less so that the quality assurance has grown pretty good and the stories are now significantly greater than the real likelihood of having a problem? Does anyone know the true state of affairs? How common are bad pixels on a modern LCD TV?

My advice is that if you buy over the internet, check to see how long the return and exchange policy is. Make sure its enough time to allow you to recieve the product, plug it in, test it, and return it if there is any problem. The best way to check for a bad pixel is either a pitch black screen, or a pitch white screen.

Yep. I appreciate what you are saying. But the sad reality is a bad pixel on an Internet purchased set is a MUCH bigger deal than the same problem on a TV bought locally. Shipping a TV back for a replacement would likely eat up any potential savings as well as introduce a giant dose of aggravation. So, how common is a problem? How good are the manufacturing processes today? Does anyone have any rough idea of what portion of TVs actually have a pixel problem?
