Default Samsung 1080p ripoff

I Bought a Samsung HL-R6168 61" rear projection DLP HDTV about 15 months ago. This TV was advertised as a 1080p TV set. I bought it with the expectation of using it with a Blue Ray or HD DVD player in the future. I now have a Blue Ray DVD player (a play station 3) and I have come to find out during the set-up process that the HDMI input on the TV will not accept a 1080p signal nor will the component video inputs. The only input capable of accepting 1080p is the pc port! I called Samsung about this problem and they said they can legally call it a 1080p set because it is capable of displaying a 1080p picture, the fact that the only input is via a PC is basically too bad. They have no plans to fix the issue but they would be more than happy to sell me a new TV that will actually accept 1080p signals through HDMI and component video ports.

Has anyone else had this issue with other 1080p sets?

Look at the Sony lineup that will only accept 1080P via HDMI and no other input so anything that will display 1080P over component or VGA is SOL with this set so your PC or Xbox 360 etc sorry to bad for you so it isn't just one company that markets this way.

Default 1080p

A lot of hdtvs are 1080p, but can't input a 1080p signal. My tv is the toshiba 62hm196 and it displays everything in 1080p, but its input is only 1080i. The tv upconverts all signals to 1080p.

Don't think that a tv with 1080p input will look any different. All cable/ota HD programs are in 1080i or 720p and will not change for a LONG time. HD-DVD outputs 1080i. Blu-Ray such as your PS3 outputs at 1080p, but there is a catch. Current tvs can't accept 1080p/24hz signals, which is what all movies are filmed in. These signals must be interlaced to 1080i and then deinterlaced and converted to 1080p60. So any movie you watch on current 1080p tvs with 1080p inputs, LOOK EXACTLY THE SAME as tvs that are 1080p with 1080i inputs. The only thing that you will lose is the games that are 1080p/60 on the PS3, which would be a bit better on an hdtv with 1080p inputs.

Don't worry about your tv, its fine. The only way to improve your picture at this point is to wait for tvs that can display/input 1080p/24 signals. Otherwise your tv will look exactly the same as a tv that accepts 1080p input.

"Current tvs can't accept 1080p/24hz signals, which is what all movies are filmed in."

Now that's just foolish.

First of all and Rick, I am not sure of your post so if it looks like I am correcting you . . I am not.

NO TV will EVER be able to show "native" 1080P 24 Hz. It would look terrible. The flickering would drive you nuts.

What the new TV's are doing is going to a multiple of 24 (72 and 120 Hz) to get rid of the 3:2 Pulldown issue otherwise know as "frame judder."

The TV's have to be compatble with 24, 30 and 60 but 60 Hz is the minimum frame rate a TV will show. It can go higher , but not lower. (in the USA)

Just ask anyone who lives in the UK or has visited the UK about PAL TV and the problem of flicker.

OK, MOST modern motion pictures are filmed and displayed at 24 fps. TVs today need to do a 3:2 pulldown, like Lee said, in order to show it, because they can't display any multiple of 24.
