What is HD?

A question for all the videophiles out there (copied from an earlier post that didn't get any replies): which of the following two pictures should be better, and why?
1. 42 inch RP CRT, HD-ready, showing a DVD from a progressive scan player and using component video cables. 2. 42 inch direct view CRT tube, non-HD, (let's assume they could make one) showing a DVD from a player without progressive scan, using an S-video cable. I don't know if the tube would have a better picture (since tubes can produce the best picture overall), or if the RP would have a better picture because of the progressive-scan signal. I'm new to all this HD stuff, so I don't understand the technology behind everything. Thanks for all the advice! |

Number 1.
Sony made a 42" 4x3 d-v crt back in the late 80's IIRC, it was a $42,000 prototype. I'm not sure if a 42" widescreen is even possible without having a curved screen, due to enormous vacuum pressure, but... If they really wanted to make a widescreen HD 42" d-v crt, I'm quite sure it would smack anything available now. But cost and cabinet depth have ruled out any attempts. The best direct-view crt's are professional 24 inchers I believe, essentially perfect. |
