Question Samsung hdmi fails to recognize

I have a Samsung HL-5067 dlp hdtv, I have tried a Samsung and a Panasonic up-converting (current unit panasonic dmr-es25) DVD player/recorder. The tv will not recognize the hdmi cable. I have also used two seperate HDMI cables two weed out the possibility of a bad cable. I have made sure that the HDMI output on the DVD is switched on. The component video works fine, but I would really like to use the HDMI to get the full 740p or 1080i. Any thoughts or suggestions would be appriciated.

Thanks!

Not sure why HDMI is not working, although lots of problems have been reported with Samsung and HDMI. But you still get full HD on component, most people can't see any difference, so why not use that??

Default I'm looking for a better picture..

The difference between my off air HD and my dish 1000 vs. the DVD quality is quite noticable. The off air and dish look fantastic on the set, the DVD quality is good, but not near the quality of the afore mentioned components. I was hoping to get a better picture that is why I am interested in the HDMI cable. My understanding is the max output from the DVD with component is 480p, with the HDMI I can get 1080p.

You cant expect the DVD to look as good as a true HD signal (720p or 1080i). The DVD material is only 480i. An "upconverting" DVD player doesnt generate new information - it simply interpolates the available data to a higher resolution. Take look at the new HD-DVD or Blueray players - they take disks that have true HD information.

Yes, I know that some of the upconverting DVDs will not output 1080i over component, that's certainly a problem. And although 480p upconverted to 1080i is not as good as HD it's still good.
However, remember that your TV does upconversion/downconversion also. What's the native resolution of your TV? If I assume it's 720p, then the DVD player is taking 480p, upconverting it to 1080i, and the TV is downconverting it to 720p. If you send the TV 480p from the DVD player, it upconverts it to 720p. Which gives the better picture, I wonder? It depends on the quality of the conversion circuits. And although I have read that some of the upconverting DVDs give a better picture than allowing the TV to do the upconversion, it's not a given that this will be the case with your setup.
Have you contacted your DVD manufacturer and Samsung to report the problem?
