What is HD?

I've owned a Pioneer PRO-530HD television for about 2 and half years. Last month, after my wife watched a VHS tape, the TV settings somehow changed. Most of cable channels now had two vertical grey bars on either side of the screen. It was now locked in 4:3 mode. In the past, I would just select the Screen Mode button and I could toggle between the 4:3 "Normal" mode and several wide screen modes (Natural Wide, Cinema Wide, etc.).
Now, no matter what I do, the screen is locked in 4:3 mode. Every time I hit the Mode Button, the word "Full" appears at the bottom of the screen, but the image is definitely not in Full Mode as it used to be. Interestingly, the screen mode toggle still works for DVDs and our few HD channels. It's just all the normal cable channels that are locked in 4:3 mode. I'd like to fix this before the grey bars burn the screen. Can anyone help? Thanks!

I don't know which cable provider or box you have but I'm using a Comcast hd dvr into a Pioneer pro-920hd. On my dvr you can select what's called a 4:3 override which gives you the choice of viewing sd with bars or stretched to fill the entire 16:9 screen. It almost sounds like somehow you selected the option to show sd in it's normal 4:3 ratio and not full screen.
