Default Toshiba lamp 3 crashes 3 months

Well, I don't really even like to come on this forum much as a handful of people who I suppose "hang out" here are very defensive. I have no agenda of my own and I am not selling anything. I just post here when something happens to me which I think other folks have the right to know about.

I have a Toshiba HM4694. Got it for Christmas before last, so it is 15 months old. Today, the 3rd lamp failed. The set has about 2400 hours on it. This lamp was installed on Christmas Eve, so it lasted about 3 months, down from the 6 months of the previous 2 lamps.

As I reported previously, "Intech", Toshiba's hired tech reps, sent a fellow to my home several weeks ago to examine my set. He said everything appeared to be normal, so he called Toshiba the next day to ask them what they thought he should do. They told him to tell me to set my lamp back up to "High Power", on the theory that the lamp was not staying hot enough. Well, I did, and now the lamp has failed 3 weeks later. Should I set number 4 to high power? Yes? No? I guess I will....

So, heck, I really have no idea. Really. TO THEIR CREDIT, Toshiba is sending us a 4th lamp! They said it was mostly the "05s" that are having problems. They claim it is just "unheard of" for lamps to be failing as quickly as mine. Readers, please believe me when I say that I am doing nothing outlandish with my DLP. For heaven's sake, with all the problems I have had, I practically tiptoe up to the thing.

Toshiba is at least staying with me, and they just say that if This Lamp, number 4 blows so quickly again, they will send a tech rep out AGAIN. OK, fine, I am not complaining if they are gonna keep replacing the lamps. BUT, yes I would just rather be having a normal experience as I suppose others are. I am having to wait for lamps after each failure. I would actually not mind purchasing a lamp if I felt confident that something was new and improved about it; that some problem with the previous ones had actually been corrected.

When the replacement lamp arrives, I will remove the old one and see if it "shattered" internally or just appears to have the "cloudy" areas inside it like the last one had.

Sorry I don't have anything comforting to say other than you can be thankfull that Toshiba appears to be trying to make things right.

Hope this newest lamp will be the last for a long time.

Product Resource: Information for Owners of 2005 DLP® Televisions

To ensure the satisfaction of our customers and to maintain the integrity and quality of our products, Toshiba America Consumer Products, L.L.C. is issuing an important product update.

Toshiba is committed to customer service and to continuously improving the quality of its products. It has come to our attention that the lamp life of some lamps in a limited number of 2005 DLP television models and serial number ranges may be less than our expectation. As part of our ongoing commitment to customer service, Toshiba is extending the warranty on the originally-installed lamp in those particular 2005 DLP television models and serial number ranges for one additional year (for a total warranty period of two years for the originally-installed lamp) to enable customers with those televisions to obtain a new and improved lamp free of charge if the originally-installed lamp fails. If you own one of the DLP television models listed below, please enter your serial number in the box below to determine if your particular DLP television qualifies for this extended warranty. The serial number can be located on the back panel of the television. Be assured that Toshiba DLP televisions are of the highest quality and this update regards a limited issue.

Model: To begin, please choose your model... 46HM95 52HM95 52HMX95 56HM195 56MX195 62HM15A 62HM195 62HM95 62HMX95 62MX195 72HM195 72MX195

It all comes down to their bottom line. Cheaper to replace a $10-$20 lamp then the whole set.

Those lamps are NOT only $10-20.00, but most people WISH they were. They actually cost anywhere from $200.00-500.00 depending on the mfg and lamp model. I just replaced my lamp after 7800 hours and it cost $409.00, but luckily I bought the extended warranty through Best Buy and they are reimbursing me for the cost. From everything I am reading, I am lucky to get that many hours from the lamp, since the longest I ever heard of one lasting is 5000 hours.

Default lamps

Hi PFC5,

Like you, I also own a RCA DLP purchased 8-04. I have the 50" version. Could you give me detailed info on how to get in and out of the service menu to check my lamp hours. I am guessing about 3000 hrs, I did have a lamp and ballast replaced under warranty in Jan.'05 although I never lost the picture, just a flashing front panel light... The service tech replaced both, just to be sure I didn't have a problem in the future.I also have the Best Buy extended warranty and a extra lamp in the closet, just in case...and yes it is the best DLP picture I have seen, in both SD digital (excellent), and HD (outstanding)....

I saw this on another thread, you might try it. Good luck........

That is for a Samsung SM, not RCA enmoco.

To get into the RCA Service Menu while set is running do this:

1. Press and hold menu and channel down button at the same time on the TV, not the remote, it should immediately display the service screen menu.

2. Press channel down to highlight item 2 Service alignment, press menu on tv to activate the alignment screen.

3. Once the alignment screen is activated, press volume up button until value ( V: ) reads 90 then press Channel up and hours on should appear..

4. Set value to v80 for the built-in test patterns

5. Set value to v76 for service adjustments BUT, be very careful. I would not touch ANYTHING in this section as it could make your TV not work. If you still insist on changing things, then make sure you write any changes down before changing. I have never gone into this area but if it has a “Reset to Default” option DO NOT USE IT! Every TV I have heard of with this option sets it to a standard point BEFORE factory adjustments are made, NOT to get it back to the delivered to store settings. BE VERY AFRAID TO GO HERE AT ALL!!!!

Just hit the regular menu button to get out of the SM.

AGAIN, do not change anything in here unless you know what you are doing!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I have not seen any help on how to make changes to the service adjustments (and I have been looking a lot), so any screwup and there will not be anyplace to go but to a tech to fix it.

The new SXRD 55 has the speakers on the bottom.Only the 60 and 70 XBR have them on the side. The model number is KDFE55E2000.Only the 60 and 70 are SXRD XBR.All E2000 are just SXRD's.

Default Toshiba no friend of the Consumer

I'm a 2005 56MX195 owner. Yeh they replaced a bulb that burnt out in the first 6 months - 500 hours but only warranted the replacement for 90 days. Guess what, 6 month later, another failure. I'm on my 4th bulb in less than 2 years. Unless you offered bulb replacement, I wouldn't take another Toshiba product if you gave it to me.
