Default Toshiba 56MX195, wait for true 1080p or go with it? also general Q's.

First I'd like to say hello to all, as i'm a Noob here.

Second I've done some searching, and alot of lurking around here as of late. Been reading up on true 1080P ,and the lack of sets out there that support it. Also been hearing the rumors that the next gen consoles support true 1080p, along with both HDDVD formats.

With that in mind, through a employee purchase program, I have the oppertunity to buy a Toshiba 56MX195 at $2499.99. My question is, is it worth it to wait for a true 1080p set?

How much of a difference will you see from upconverted vs true?

It seems that this is a pretty good deal on a quality set, with a extended warrenty, and toshs' 2 year bulb plan, how can I overlook this?

Other general Q's:

Do these TV's have any problems when you connect a computer to them? Will they recgonize the signal?

Can you easily force the TV into 720P/60for sports broadcasts? I've heard they look better at this resolution.

For SD, can you resize the viewable area on the screen? As in make the image take up asmaller portion of the screen, thus reducing stretching/artifacts?

Any tips I should look out for?

Anyways, thanks for any help you guys can give. Seems like this forum is a great place with a multitude of HD knowledge!

Sound and Vision just did an article on HD-DVD and Blu-Ray DVD players. Blu-Ray will be offered in 1080p by Samsung and Pioneer Elite right out of the gate (May). So, there is going to be source material for 1080p very soon. Whether or not you can tell much difference between 1080i upconverted or 1080p I can't say.

FIRST STRIKE: HD DVD
It's all but inevitable that HD DVD will be out before Blu-ray, and that the first players will be Toshiba's $799 HD-XA1 and $499 HD-A1. But the format war is full of surprises, and the big one here is that neither player can handle the super-high-rez 1080p format. (On the other hand, nobody expects to see 1080p HD DVDs early on.

Well I've heard that PS3 has stated that it will support 1080P for games and BR media (one or both, I can't remember). I will be preodering the system come june, when pre-orders most likely start.

With that said, is waiting for 1080P worth it?

Enmoco, hows your set treating you?

Welcome and thanks for asking.I absolutely love the PQ of my set. Its native resolution is 1080p,but,it will not accept 1080p input. With all that said, I was not going to wait on anything COMING. When I see something I like better, I will take it home. It has given some problems early but is working great now. Good luck

As far as I know no stores are taking pre-orders yet in the US, due to not knowing pricing, or even a release date. Most people are saying E3 or shortly after is when they'll start.

Yeah, I guess your right, and I probably won't have the extra 2K saved by fall/winter needed for the new sets anyways (I'm currently living on an entry leveljob :/ ). Should have one of these puppies within the next month or so.

Have they fixed the bulb problem in the sets out there right now? Or would I possibly get one that still has that issue?

I have the set you are interested in. If PC connection is a must, the MX195's are the models that suppport this. I wouldn't expect full functionality between tv and computer via the ethernet port or 1394 connections. I've not connected my computer to the set but a service man told me full functionality is not there yet.

As for PQ, the set is GREAT. Like some other's I had an early lamp failure but with recent info on upgraded lamps, I don't think anyone knows how well they will perform.

As for 1080I Vs 1080P, I'm not sure you'll see much if any improvement. And for devises outputing 1080P, I'd ask at what frame rate, 24, 30, 60 fps.

From my 3 months ownership of the set, I'd not say anything bad to anyone considering one of these. As for the lamps, I think what Toshiba has done recently to rectify the issue, speaks well for them.

Thanks for all the helpful responces guys, you've pretty much sold this set to me! Just out of curiousity, do you know what stores carry these? I've checked both tweeter and BB, but they don't have this, or the lower end model in display. I wanted to play around with it and see the great image qualiity

I also have another question, new to my employee discount I could also to go with a Mitsubishi 62" 1080P WD62628. I know your all Tosh fans, but which is better in your opinion? I could get the Mit for $2999.99 (reg $4199.99 ) or keep going with the Tosh for $2499.99 (reg $3499.99)

Where are you located? I bought mine from a West coast chain that offers good prices and offers and EW through G.E. at a very good price.

Massachusetts,

I found the 52" version Tosh in a cambridge soundworks today, looked pretty good there, also in sears where it was at eye level while standing and didn't look as good (maybe they hadn't got it set up right?).

Also saw the 62" Mit, which was considerably bigger, but was also at sears and looked poorer then the displays at CSW (it was also an older model that only supported 720P).

personally I am waiting for true 1080p sets. I'm in no rush to jump into a $2-4000 Television purchase to begin with so this is how I see it. Yes, there will always be a better television coming down the line, however, with a 1080p you should be able to display the highest resolution for a ways to come. 1080p feeds may not be available when such TVs are released, but you know its coming in at least HD-DVD/Blue ray, and eventually over the air/cable. I imagine true 1080p set will last you longer in the end than you have to wait now for them to be released.

All DLP's, LCD's, Plasmas, LCOS's always display progressivley NOW. I think they are at 1080p/30. All movies are at 24 fps. Doubling the same frame twice from a Blueray and sending the signal at 1080p/60 would be doubling the same frame. It will add no new information to the movie, no resolution---nothing. No TV station will broadcast in 1080p for years, and even when they do, if it's any movie up to 2006, which are at 24 fps, it will not benefit the picture. It is much ado about nothing at this point.

if you dont mind ordering online, you'll get a hell of a deal. Heres the same tv for 2100 plus shipping which shipping would be around 200 i believe.

and also, you might want to look at the 62" version which is running for 2500 plus shipping. From what ive read, people have had great experiences from them. And also, you have to consider the taxes you save . Good luck, report back with your experiences.

Oh, thanks, but thoes are the HM's with the limited number of connections, and without all the bells and whistles. I can get them for a bit cheaper on my purchase program, but I think I will indeed have to pay tax through it.
