Hi, all,
I just moved into a home with a great media room and built in home theatre wiring, and have just about decided to go with the Samsung and digital sat from direct TV. I am told that the 50" is no longer available, being replaced, but the 55" looks great. What DVD player would be best to buy for this monitor. I've been advised (by a salesman, of course) to get an INTEGRA DPS-5.4 for $350. I see other progressive scan units available for much less. Other "High end" units are much more expensive. What gives? Ted |

I bought the Samsung HLN507W DLP last October and am 99% delighted. To my knowledge the 50 inch model is not being terminated. Just went to the Samsung website (www.samsungusa.com) and all the current models are listed: 43, 50, 56 and 61 inch. One thing to be aware of - get the size with the model number beginning with HLN, not HLM. The HLN's have the black bezel surrounding the screen, which, aside from looking good, frames the picture area with a nice band of contrast. Also, I think the HLN's are the most recent version of the Samsung DLP models. You will notice that the HLM's are priced considerably lower than the newer HLN's. As for getting a DVD player, I got the Samsung HD931 which was, or maybe still is, the only DVD player which can upconvert all 480p/i dvd's to (in the case of the Samsung DLP's) the hi def resolution of 720p. Even though any upconversion is not true hi def, it sure looks fantastic. If you get the 931, be a purest and use the straight digital DVI connection between the player and the tv. (The 931 has the DVI as its only pure digital output - also has analog component output.) That leaves the RGB connection as the only other straight digital input in the back of the monitor. Use that between the monitor and your satellite receiver. The picture is just as killer - DVI or RGB. If you haven't contracted with Directv yet, you might check out VOOM. They seem to be offering a sweet deal right now and they have so many more hi def channels than anyone else. Unless Directv substantially increases the number of hi def channels that they offer by the time my one-year contract is up, I may switch to VOOM. Good luck with your choices!

i agree with Lurf....
You must get a DVD player with DVI output... you would be doing yourself an injustice if you did not... i myself bought the Samsung hd-931... Very happy... picture is AMAZING... almost high def.... Samsung has 2 new players currently out... the HD841 & HD941... the 941 will be released soon... i have heard of issues with the loader on the 841 and know that many people have pre ordered the 941...wich is supposed to fix black and white crush issues that the 931 had... also check out the Bravo D2 and i think momitsu makes one also... |

Make sure you can get a dvd player with no HDCP
activation. They will soon not be here. |

Strange. I just purchased the Samsung DVD-HD841. Hooked it up with the DVI and was checking it for the best setup on my Samsung HLN507W. It appears to have locked up. All that shows is a screen full of colored dots. None of the controls except the eject works. The audio loads but no picture (other than the above)if I boot it up with a disc in it. It does work with the analog...... Did I mess up somewhere or do I have a defective unit? Or am I just being dumb?
Thanks ahead of timeBob |

You'll be lucky to find any remaining HLN models, they were the 2003 model year. 2004 is HLP and 2005 is HLR.
I'd disagree with the salesman who wants to make a big $ sale... you have a TV with the excellent Faroudja upconversion chip, so it's redundant to buy a DVD player with another in it... I'd save my money for a REAL high def optical disc player in the fall, and use any decent progressive player until then. Bobby Lee's problem is probably the darn copy protection stuff on the HDMI connection... you've got to be sure the TV is turned on before powering the DVD player, so they can verify the DVI connection is secure. Your best res to set will be the 720p which is the TV's native res. |
