Well, countless hours of research on the web and at the stores doing side by side comparisons and I still can't make a decision between HDILA (which is what I thought LCoS was) and DLP.
What I'm learning is that all the technologies have their own pros and cons, therefore I should purchase what looks good to me. My concern, though is that all these stores don't necessarily spend the same amount of time optimizing the set; therefore, a direct visual comparion isn't possible - especially from store to store. Plus, a lot of the threads I read seem to support or contradict one's research results. Bottom line...I'm ready to spend some hard earned dough - what will the experts spend their money on today - will it be HDILA or DLP? I've heard so many 'experts', or people who talk confidently not ignorantly, proclaim they love the JVC over the Samsung and vice versa. A call to my store this week will lock in my purchase. What's my best bet for what I can buy today (between the two aforementioned technologies). Sorry 'bout the ramblings but it's not too often that I plan on spending three grand plus on a tv. |

I got an JVC HDILA. Looked great in the store. After I got mine home (50 inch model) I noticed that there was a slight green convergence problem on one of the sides. To make a long story short, turns out that the JVC's have a problem with that. Some of them are perfect and some of them aren't. Once they leave the factory you can't change the convergence. I exchanged it for a Sony LCD rear projection and I love it. Haven't had any problems. The DLPs look good too as long as you can't see the rainbow affect. I can't, I just didn't want freinds or family to have problems with that. Anyway, if it was the JVC you were looking at I'd be a little leary based on the convergence problem.

I have been looking at Rear Projection TV's (DLP, LCOS) for some time and here are my observations for what it's worth.
Compared picture quality of Panasonic 50 " LCD and their new DLP PT-50DL54 sets. I have also compared against JVC and Sony LCOS and Samsung DLP. I have come to these conclusions: LCOS sets have brighter whites and darker blacks, period. But they sacrifice this darker black by giving up dark area details. Does not matter which manufacturer you pick. DLP sets show more "detail" in the dark areas but you don't see true blacks. Does not matter if it's HD2 or HD3 or HD2+ DLP technology. This may be the reason why HDTV's show rooms have their TV's displaying a video that never stays on one scene for very long. Makes it hard to truly compare picture quality. Bottom line is that both technologies (LCOS & DLP) are good. But each one does something better than the other. You just have to decide which is more important to you. |

I personally would hold off on DLP for now, and here's why;

Maximus, it looks like your table is telling me that the lamp in the HD-ILA I'm getting will only last 1k hours?! Seems strange. What do you other HD-ILA owners think about that? What were you told? I've heard it lasts for ~8k hours!

That first column is for a D-ILA projector not a RPTV. Note the N/A in the screen size. Projector lamp life is a fraction of the RPTVs.
Notice the LCOS in the 5th column is at 80k+ hours. |

i have had a jvc hd-ila 52" tv for just under a year and the bulb has already blown out. when jvc was called there reply was it is rated for 6000 hours which is only 7 months. this is a secondary tv so it is barely watched and all heat vents are not blocked in any way or powered off by unplugging which is what jvc first told me was the reason for the short life of bulb. the bulbs are $200 plus shipping so keep in mind when going to buy one that you will probably have to pay that every year you own the tv. i love the picture on the tv but it is not worth the replacement costs. i went with a philips plasma as my main tv and that has a much better picture and rated for 60000 hours. only had 3 months so we'll see.

I'd rather go with Sony's SXRD technology than DLP regardless of the number of letters. I may change my mind when 3-chip DLP designs become affordable.

You want reliability and a better picture ? Look at a Hitachi CRT HDTV, 57F710A to be specific.
