How can anyone watch standard def?

KEY POINTS:
1. I want to get a TV for movies (DVD). 2. I don't care about cable provided television that much. 3. There MAY be a point where I use it. I don't want to pay for HDTV through a cable provider. Until it's free and until I see a really good deal coming from one, I'm not going to use their services. 100+ a month for TV and internet just isn't happening right now. 4. Size/weight doesn't matter that much yet it is considered. I am more concerned with the size of the viewing than the size of the box. 5. Price is little to consider. I want a nice TV. 6. I would LIKE my TV to be compatible with HD DVD players. I want my TV to be fully compatible if possible. If it's not possible, should I wait? 7. If the wait is in the decently-near-future, what should I do about a temporary fix. I just bought a Home Theater Surround Sound System. I'm trying to enjoy it. I want my TV to blend in with my gear. I have a small TV right now. My speakers will sound rediculous with a TV that small! It won't sound natural! That's all I can think of right now. - What should I consider? - What questions should I be asking (you/myself)? - What factors/decisions am I facing? - Am I directing this question in the right place? - Any recommendations on dealers (new/used)? - Any product recommendations (deals?)? - When is the best time to look for TV's (on/offline)? - Should I wait until after Christmas to buy? |

I love my JVC! But it is really up to you and your eyes. People complain a little about the BLACK LEVELS on the JVC line up. But for the most part these are not people who have ever owned this set. Most people that own this set bought it for the COLOR and brightness of the screen. I know when I bought mine the JVC was tested and showed to have the Brightest picture of all the other lines.Hope this helps. Good Luck. By the way another plus about the JVC you have your choice of Black or Silver sets (I went with BLACK, looks very sharp! . Alot of brands only sell the Silver.

- Do you think it would be better to get the older models now; not after Christmas? Quote:
- Great advice! I'll keep that in mind! I would have never thought to do that! Thanks! I'll pass on the recommendation if asked. Quote:
looking at has them. As far as I know, all DVI does is allows the capability to encrypt/decrypt a transmission (to protect the media from copyright infringement). Given the fact that I care less about Disney's need to copyright their products, I don't think I want to support their attempt to keep the world honest. NOW, I'm sure there is something that eventually I will want it for. As for now, I don't know how it's better that HDMI. I don't know what these cables/inputs allow me to do. I've read something about the upconversion of signals. Having said that, will it help me in my attempt to watch DVD's or is it's only purpose to improve the quality of cable television. To be quite honest, I don't care to see all the wrinkles on Bob Barker's face! Quote:
- Price: The least amount possible (1500 would be nice. I could go as high as 3000 but I don't want to!!)- Sound: I MIGHT use it from the TV. At the same time, I have a center speaker and I'll only use the speakers from my tv if it makes it sound better! Quote:

Of course it helps!!!! Thanks!!! I want bright. I don't know how I feel about the lask of dark. Have you EVER watched something and thought it didn't look natural? I mean, I'm trying to watch movies. Sometimes when I go to Circut City's TV section, I see movies that look dark- I DON'T WANT THAT. Sometimes I see things that look fuzzy- I DON'T WANT THAT. As for bright images, do they ever look bad when watching a horror movie or a war movie? Thinking back to everything you have seen on your TV, did you ever think, "that looks too bright"? To be quite honest, too bright is a matter of opinion (I'm sure). At the same time, certain things should be evident to all!!! If you're watching a movie and it's too dark, you can't see everything. On the otherhand, if it's too bright, it should be pretty obvious that the movie looks so. If you don't think it looks too bright, most likely, neither will I. At the same time, some people like to blow up their equipment as if it were the best out there. I'm not an optimist. I think optimistic people are nieve. I am a realist. I like to look at the world as it is. As I see it, nothing's perfect. Having said that, I'm looking for a TV that, although it might have flaws, it's the best for the money. I want a TV that will stand the test of time. I want a TV that will impress people . I want all of this in a TV and I DON'T want it breaking my pockets!!

Regarding where you make your purchase I have found that many online vendors sell these TVs for up to 30% less then the bes tdeal I have found at my Local BB, CC type stores. I am looking at the SOny RPLCD KDF-E55A20. The local stores have this unit for $2999 plus 5% tax plus $40 shipping. The same model I have found online for under $2300 shipped, no tax. IMO there is a benefit to buyinglocally... if you get the extended warranty for $400.
Now consider buying the TV from the local BB, CC and paid $2999 + tax + shipping+ warranty I am looking at about $3550. Or online without warranty for $2300. Sure I would not get the auotmatic protection of the bulb replacement ($200) but hey I am about $1300 ahead. Also, most credit cards will match the manufacturers warranty. So if you buy online with a credit card (Amex, Visa) you will automatically extend your warr from one to two years.... There are many online vendors with very good reputations.. Abe's of Maine come sto mind... just look into it a bit and maybe you'll feel more comfortable saving bit and purchasing on-line. AND making your dollars go farther! |

I think you'd be happy with a JVC.
No I have never thought it was too BRIGHT. I take that back In the movie Independence Day when they flash the white screen inbetween days you really need your sunglasses Everyone on this board has been happy with their JVC. I did alot of research on these sets, I was first looking into a Sony. I was in the store cash in hand ready to by it. Then I looked to my left and there was the JVC. The picture blew me away! I looked back at the Sony and thought "What am I about to do?" went back home spent 3 weeks online ( Not 24/7 ) researching the JVC. The rest is history. If you're wanting an older model do it now. After Christmas will be too late. I have the HD-61Z585 ( the 8 means its Black ) Look into this one or the HD-52Z575-or-585. If you look long and hard you might find the 52" for around $1300. Go to JVC.com and look around. Better yet go to a BB and view the sets in person. By the way the HDMI cable is just a pure digital cable with sound.

The set you end up buying will be a gut reaction or it was for me. First I read a lot on online reviews a this site also The AVS forums and ecoustic.com all have good information form consumer. Next I went to BB, CC, Sears looking at all the different technology for myself this included DLP, Plasma, LCD and I was still confused and furstrated. Frankly one set would look so good one day, and the next day another would look so good. What I did pretty much as for any of us with modest mean, you must feel good when spending this amount of money on a TV. Basically do not second guess yourself you will never buy anything. There will always be a newer technology or the price will always drop with time but that is the way it goes. My advise is look around at the big box store, compare price on the Internet, and used a credit card for purchase return insurance. Last thing is to check the manufacture web sites to make sure online dealer is a authorize dealer, and avoid any Internet price that seem a lot cheaper than anyone else it is usual a "B"Stock meaning warranty return item.

HD-52Z575-or-585... (is the only difference the color?)
Do you think this will be overkill on functionality? I want a beautiful picture and I think the 51" is right in my budget! The size is perfect! I think I'm ready to go to the store to see what this set looks like. Still.... no one has complaints? No one thinks they could have done it better? I hear it requires a second tuner to enjoy PIP. I don't care about PIP! What will the lack of a second tuner affect? CNET says: "Overall, this TV's features seem a bit weak for its price, compared to most other TVs. In fact, you would usually pay around 30% less to get a rear-projection TV with roughly the same viewable size." Having said that, what could I find that's 30% less? Why is this one the way to go? I think it will be a good fit.
And yes the only diffrence is the 575 is silver and the 585 is black. I could have done better.....Instead of the 61" I could have gone with the 70" for another $1500-2000

Plasma or 1080p?

Let me borrow from the good idea that started this thread. I am looking for a high quality tv for viewing:
- HD Live sports - Football, Hockey, Basketball - Reality TV and SD on occasion - HD TV shows - DVDs I know PQ mostly boils down to viewer preference however here's my dilema: do I pull the trigger on a 50" plasma (prices are dropping big time) or wait on a better selection of (and possibly larger) DLP or LCoS 1080p units. Is buying a 720p unit at this point a waste of money? I have about 4k to work with. I've had my current mitsu 48" for about 10 years and it still works great so I want quality. Like so many people everytime I see something I like - I see something the next day that changes my mind. Bottom line - I'm leaning toward the plasma but don't want to pull the trigger if there's a better option. Clearly I'm losing my mind. Thanks, |

The problems I am concerned with are: "WHEN USING A UP CONVERT DVD PLAYER THE BACKGROUNDS ARE BLURRED,GRAINY AND THE WORST IS THE BLACKS ARE BAD IF YOU HAVE THE TV SET TO ANY OTHER MODE OTHER THAN THEATER PRO THE BLACKS HAVE PURPLE HUES THROUGH OUT, DISSAPPOINTING." "I viewed it next to a Samsung DLP and a Sony LCD, both the Samsung and Sony were clearly superior to the JVC. In fact, at one of the stores they had a last generation Samsung that still looked superior to the JVC." "Within the first 3 weeks, the lamp blew. Funny thing, it was going to take a couple of weeks for the company to order the part and put it in. We got 'another TV' from the company. Since then, we have a blow dryer in our living room." "The colors are far overstated. Skin tones look orange, put a yellow on the screen and you may burn your eyes out." "I was very pleased to see the quality of HD programming via monster component cables when connected to my HD cable box, however, when switching to standard 480i resolution, i am extremely disappointed. I chalked it up to being so used to HD clarity, that the "normal" 480i signal looks that much worse. The picture just looks "digital" and grainy. So now I only watch the 13 channels of HD that my cable company offers. BUT THE 16 CHANNELS ARE AMAZING" |

This was only my opinion. The problems I have read about I have never had in person.
All sets have their share of problems. Some of them are burn-in, fade over time, bad screen door, Raindow, image blur, Lip sync or lag. Just pick your poison and make the leap of faith. Their are lemons in all items. I hope no one here gets one but who am I kidding. If those reading this are that worried about problems with a new set, than just play it safe and buy the largest tube HD you can find. As for me...I said if once and I'll say it again. I love this set. I have not seen or had any of the issues brought up on this forum. And I view everything from SD, HD, DVD to XBOX-LIVE. NO ISSUES!

I understand. I have heard many many horror stories about many many TV's out there. I have heard time and time again how bad customer service is. I guess it's the price you pay for buying into a newer technology. Even more so, I guess it's the price you pay when HDTV's prices had to drastically drop in order for companies to sell their "invested on" technologies. Companies are cutting corners like crazy to push these TV's off the shelf. At what cost are they doing this, I ask.... I think I'm going to wait... I want to see quality come out. If I buy a bad TV, I'm going to be stuck with my 32". I'm going to be stuck paying 2500$ for a 22" TV... I think I'd be better off getting a 32" Samsung TX R3265. Although I haven't looked at CRT's yet, I loved their DLP technology. I went to Best Buy. I liked Mitsubishi's box. I loved Samsungs picture. The way I see it, unless I see a crazy deal out there, I'm going to look at the CRT's.... No decisions as of yet... plenty more questions to go.... I'll probably end up getting a DLP. We'll see... |

Biggie..... how is your Samsung HLP5663W 56" DLP? I saw one today and loved it.
What problems are you facing? What problems have you faced? How long have you had your TV? |
