Default Does my lamp need to be replaced??? Help.

Hi All,

It's been a few months since my last posts and you we're all very helpful in helping me diagnose my broken color wheel and getting me all the information I needed to repair it on my own.

I own a Samsung HLR 5078W and it was purchased new in Oct. of 2005. It has a been a great HDTV despite needing to replace the faulty light tunnel and the most recent broken color wheel.

My latest problem is last night while I was watching t.v. it just turned off. Went to black. Not my tivo box but just the t.v. So I waited a minute and turned the t.v. back on from the remote and it didn't do it again the rest of the night. I actually thought my leg hit the remote and turned it off. But today my son was watching a DVD and he called me in to tell me that the t.v. turned off. Same exact thing. Just turned off and went black. The only thing I can think of is it's time to change the lamp/bulb. Is this pretty typical? Does the going black become more frequent until it finally just won't turn on? If anyone has any information I would greatly appreciate it.

If it is the lamp/bulb I'm pretty confident I can order the part and do the repair myself since I've already been successful at removing the entire light engine and replacing the broken color wheel. Looks like the lamp should be an easy fix compared to that.

Thanks for the input. Frank

Usually the lamp will blow with a pop. But one of the easiest ways of identifying the issue is that a blown lamp affects picture, not audio. It doesn't sound like you are getting audio from the TV which means a different issue.

Well now that you mentioned the audio I actually recall both times when the t.v. turned off and went black the audio was still playing in the background. My tivo box stayed on and the audio reciever was still on so I had sound, just no picture.

I also have read in alot of other lamp related threads that in some cases a lamp can hang in there for months before it completely pops.

Appreciate the feedback and look forward to more from others.

Thx.

If the lamp has never been changed, it may be dying.

That's the direction I was leaning. I've read before that while the lamp is dying it will continue to work and the turning off and going black will become more frequent until the lamp finally blows. I had two back to back days where it went black once each day but now it hasn't gone black in three days. Seems like a lamp going bad to me.

Maybe I'll monitor it until it becomes more frequent and I know for sure it's the lamp.

Someone had sent me a detailed link on how to change the colorwheel. I wonder if anyone knows of a link showing how to change the lamp on HLR 5078w. Thx. Frank

Go to www.discount-merchant.com for your bulb needs. They have instructional videos there as well.

It is the original lamp and the set was purchased in Oct. of 2005 so I'm planning on replacing the lamp regardless of whether that is what's causing the picture to go black and turn off. I will monitor it for a little longer and track how often it happens and when it becomes daily or just plain annoying I'll order the part and fix it myself.

Like you mentioned, I noticed at discount merchants you can purchase the base lamp by itself or the lamp w/ enclosure. Does anyone have an opinion one way or the other which is the best way to go. It's roughly $30.00 more to purchase the lamp w/ enclosure. The other route is purchasing the base lamp seperately and using the existing enclosure. Any thoughts?

Thx. FC

Buy it with the enclosure. Makes it easier to install and you have less chance of touching the bulb and potentially damaging it.

Also after the first replacement with a housing, you can order just the bulb the next time and put it in the first housing, and be ready for when the second one fail.

Thanks for all the advice. I like the idea of buying the lamp w/ enclosure so I just have to pop it in and be done with it. Less chance of touching the bulb like you mentioned.

I havn't had a chance to look at the repair link. Do you know if replacing the bulb is similer to replacing the color wheel? If I recall when I removed the light engine to replace the color wheel the lamp was right there. If so, I feel pretty confident about doing the repair myselft. Had no problems replacing the broken color wheel. Picture looked great with a new color wheel and I'm sure with a new bulb it will look even better.

Thx. FC
