Default Samsung HLP5063W

We have a 50" Samsung DLP that we purchased 1/30/05 from Best But. I did take the 4 yr svc agreement when I bought and have had the lamp replaced once while under warranty.

Now that it is out of warranty I noticed that when I turn the set off I will hear a faint whiring and grinding noise like a fan coming to a stop. Never noticed that sound before. It starts making the noise approximately 30 seconds after turning the set's power off and lasts for maybe 15 to 20 seconds.

I have never messed with the thing before but did take the lamp cover off to look around for something obvious. Did not remove the lamp. The only fan I saw appeared to be towards the center of the set and there was a little dust. I blew it off with canned air. That was the only fan type object I could see through the access hole.

Did not help. Any ideas and should I even worry about it? Picture and sound are perfect but I dont want to ignore a minor problem and watch it turn into something major and costly.

Hoping someone can teach this old dog a new trick.....

Grinding noises usually indicate a color wheel beginning to fail. You can wait till it gets louder or the color gets messed up or goes to black and white. If it gets worse you can always check the condition of the color wheel by removing the lamp+housing and look behind that area, see if the color wheel is shattered when the time comes, that's what the noises normally lead to.

Hi,Yes it does sound like the color wheel is about to go since it spins at high rpms and have an average life of 5-8 yrs.You didn't listed your tv model ,but just to let you know there's different version gold or silvers for certain tvs you have to make sure you get the correct one. Here's instructions to replace it: http://guides.fixyourdlp.com/samsung/bp96-01579a.php? Good luck and God bless you!
