Default Sony's response to overheated lamps melting tv

While I was trying to replace a 4 yrs. old blew lamp on my Sony Grand Wega KDF-42WE655. I discovered the lamp access door and the surrounding area near the lamp enclosure were melted due to the intense heat of the lamp.

After a good amount of online research on this issue I came across Sony's ongoing response to this issue(expires next March)

http://esupport.sony.com/US/perl/new...55&news_id=261

And after a few more good amount of online research I came across some folks who had dealt with Sony on this issue and eventually offered a replacement current model at a substential discount.

Oh, I purchased this TV in 2005 at best buy for a little bit over 2K, and of course I lost my receipt after the one year warranty was over.

Has anyone dealt with this here? Thanks in advance

The discount isn't very good and it is only for another Sony product. Not a very good deal, at least to me. Why would I want to purchase another overpriced piece of equipment from a company who manufactured the defective one to begin with.

Just doesn't make sense...

thanks for the inputs love2watch:

what was the bad deals you were offered, may I ask?

I'm about to go ahead and call Sony on this, just wondering if anyone has any recent personal experience with this.

There are quite a few posts here discussing that exact same deal. A few hundred off a new Sony display, no thanks.

just spoke to Sony, and they gave me the standard list of local service center to call. When I ask for some kind of confirmation number for the "limited extended warranty repair", they gave me a "sorry sir, we do not cover for things such as this"....what BS!!
I offer the telephone rep the link to the Sony eSupport page that states the fact it is indeed covered(until March 2010), he told me he has no email, but then with hesitation he gave me an Event ID#. I'm suppose to give this number to our local sony service center.

anyways, looks like a long bumpy fight coming up.
