Just purchased a Panasonic AX100U Projector and an Oppo DV-981HD DVD Player last week and have experienced 2 problems. I need help in diagnosing which device is the culprit.
I've put about 20 hours on both devices so far, and generally everything is working fine. However, I did experience the following: I turned on both devices and waited for the Panny HDMI input to detect the Oppo, which it normally does. But this time, the Panny blue screen just sat there with the HDMI input icon flashing, indicating that it couldn't find a signal on that input. After a few minutes of trying different resolutions on the Panny, I turned off the Oppo and turned it back on, and voila ... the Panny detected the HDMI input. Then yesterday, I turned on both devices and the Panny displayed it's blue screen, followed by the Oppo blue logo screen. But when the DVD actually started to play, it was obvious that only the red signal was getting through. Again the resolution was to power off/on the Oppo and everything was fine. Can anyone suggest which device could be causing either or both of these problems? I guess since re-cycling power on the Oppo resolved the problem, it would seem to point there, but having only the red signal displaying seems more like a projector issue. I have a good quality 40 foot HDMI cable, the connectors are well-seated, and it wasn't touched at any point during the problems or their resolutions. Since these are the only HDMI devices I have and since the problems are very intermittent, I can't swap out or test another device on either end to try to diagnose the problem. Any suggestions? |

It's the HDCP handshake sequence between the two that's at issue. You should from now on just simply turn on the Panny and let it complete it's power-up cycle 'til you get the blue screen and then turn on the Oppo. This is common for HDMI connections.
BTW, congrats on the Panny...a very nice unit!

Thanks for the reply.
Your response was dead-on. Actually, while waiting for a response, I called Oppo (should have done that first ). The technician I spoke to said exactly the same thing regarding the first problem. The second problem (red screen) apparently is another HDMI syncing problem, this one fixed by a recent firmware upgrade not installed on my unit when it shipped. Oppo is sending me a cd with the upgrade. Anyone else experiencing the problem needs to install the 1227B firmware.
