Sorry.

I wasn't ticked at you.

I'm not saying Microsoft is perfect, but I get sick of the "Microsoft is satan" attitude some people have.

I agree.

Also I have had 3 computers running windows Vista, one Vista Ultimate and two Vista Home Premium. I was also a beta tester for Vista and have always liked it.

When Vista first came out I had a dual boot system that could be used with either XP Professional or Vista Ultimate, I found I never used XP I liked Vista much more that I eventually just got rid of the XP partition.

I also liked XP when it first came out, I remember a lot of people did not like XP when it came out.

I will be able to get a free Windows 7 upgrade, I already sent in for it. I have not used Windows 7 yet even though I had the beta I never installed it, I was happy with Vista and just never bothered with the Windows 7 beta. I will install the Windows 7 upgrade when it comes.

I am not sure why others are so unhappy, my computers keep getting better and better. I enjoy upgrading them, making improvements with both the hardware and software.

2 questions for Ex_Brit:

I pre-ordered my Win 7 back when it was half price. I have Ultimate on my machine now, and ordered Win 7 Pro. I didn't see the point to Ultimate. So here's my questions:

1) Does Win 7 have an imaging system in it for back up or do I need a separate program like Arconis or Paragon or whatever? I want to image my system when I get it completely finished so I can keep a good clean copy on file.

2) Does Win 7 have the "upgrade loophole" that Vista does? Obviously I ordered the upgrade, but I want a fresh install on a separate drive until I get it finished and 100% done the way I want it. I want to used the upgrade loophole that Vista had to install it fresh.

I am glad I did not struggle to convert to Vista after all the problems. I will continue to use XP until there's a PC replacement involved. Who knows what MS will be running by then. Or something competitive will be better.

Windows 7 has "Windows Back Up and Restore" (plus "Windows Easy Transfer" of course).
With this you can let Windows decide or choose files and folders yourself for backup to whatever location & setup a schedule.
Now I'm not sure what you use Acronis True Image for but its advantage is the ability to clone a drive which I don't think
is possible using tools built into Windows.

But you can create a System Image similar to a System Restore or a System Repair disk...see attached thumbnail.

In answer to your second question, yes, I think that is possible. There's a tute here on an upgrade install and you'll see a link there on doing a clean install, which you have to do anyway if upgrading from XP.

Many different versions of user friendly Linux or BSD, for free...
IBM just said no to Microsoft.

What I'm looking for is a complete image of the drive after I'm done that I can store on a separate drive so that I can re-build my machine in a snap if I need to in 6 months or a year. Not looking for a "back-up" of personal files, I already have that with Norton 360. I want a true drive image so I can re-image my PC instead of re-install Windows if something goes wrong or my drive crashes or whatever.

Does Windows 7 have the same (annoying) security prompts when you try to run a program? Is it compatible with Office 2003?

In all fairness to Microsoft, many problems people experienced were with incompatible software, no drivers etc. etc., and Microsoft can hardly be blamed for that because these developers had years to get ready for Vista and many of them just simply ignored it or dragged their feet. There are still some manufacturers who haven't yet made their products Vista-ready, let alone Windows 7-ready.

Also many people were taken by surprise thinking that systems with minimal resources that handled Windows 95, 98, and XP OK would handle newer OS's in the same way.

Even my then top-of-the-line Pentium 4 had issues and I was forced to spend money on upgrades, to the point that it was just about stretched to its limits. That's why I splurged on a 64-bit system. Until XP that wasn't an option and even with XP was exorbitantly expensive, even if you could find any applications that would run on it.
Now they are talking 128-bit systems....heaven only knows where it will end up in say 100 years time.

I realise many people aren't fortunate in having the spare cash to invest in new systems or upgrade when they want to. It's tough I know.

Regarding Linux. I tried it and simply lost patience with it as it just was too much like hard work, for me at least.

You can tune those alerts on Windows 7.

I ran Works 2002 on it, so yes, it will work.

Then you want a utility such as Acronis True Image.

Windows Vista Ultimate has a complete computer backup in a more advanced "Windows Back Up and Restore" the other versions do not.

To me this is the best advantage in Vista Ultimate it will completely restore your entire computer to the cloned saved version and does it very quickly typically 15 minutes.

I believe this will be available on Windows 7 Professional and Ultimate but none of the other Windows 7 versions.

Well it is and it isn't...in so many words. There's an article here: http://lifehacker.com/5144757/first-...restore-center

I have Windows 7 Ultimate (final RTM) and haven't really had time to investigate this yet.

Well I haven't had any experience with Windows 7 yet myself so I can't say for sure. However it does list that the complete computer backup is contained in the Professional and the Ultimate versions on Windows 7 versions comparison list on the Windows 7 site.

I know I really like the complete computer backup in the Vista Ultimate edition, it is probably the only thing I really miss on my Vista Home Premium versions that my Ultimate version has.

The article you linked does not get into the specific versions so I think that the article was mostly based on the lesser versions, but the article does mention that Windows 7 expanded on what Vista offered in "Windows Back Up and Restore".

Take a look at your Windows 7 Ultimate "Windows Back Up and Restore" and see what you find.

The Vista Ultimate version contains two types of backups, one which backs up files and one that completely backs up the entire computer, while the lesser versions only has the file back up.
