Worldwide boxoffice increased 5.2% in 2008, reaching a historic high of $28.1 billion, according to the MPAA, which released its annual snapshot of the movie industry Tuesday.
International boxoffice, which rose to $18.3 billion, accounted for 65% of the worldwide figure, while domestic boxoffice climbed slightly to $9.8 billion. Overall, international boxoffice, as reported in U.S. dollars, has grown 17% in the past five years.
For 2008, domestic boxoffice grew by 1.7% over 2007. However, admissions, which numbered 1.364 billion, were down 2.6% for the year. Admissions have stayed relatively flat for the past 10 years, with the exception of 2002's high of 1.6 billion admissions.
Meanwhile, the average ticket price increased by 30 cents to $7.18, up 4.4% over the previous year.
Nationwide, the total number of theaters remained flat at 6,289, but individual theaters boasted more screens as the number of screens rose to 40,194 in 2008, up 0.3% from the previous year.
