What even Roland Emmerich won't destroy: an Islamic landmark

Quote:
"Well, I wanted to do that, I have to admit," Emmerich says. "But my co-writer Harald said I will not have a fatwa on my head because of a movie. And he was right. ... We have to all ... in the Western world ... think about this. You can actually ... let ... Christian symbols fall apart, but if you would do this with [an] Arab symbol, you would have ... a fatwa, and that sounds a little bit like what the state of this world is. So it's just something which I kind of didn't [think] was [an] important element, anyway, in the film, so I kind of left it out."
Fatwa or no Fatwa, do you think this is a good choice or bad choice?

Arab symbols are no different than any other religious symbol. If you're going to destroy one, destroy them all...

They destroyed our twin towers. Gives us the right to shoot them twixt times how many virgins we can pluck out of the plunder. Whats the hold up Mr President? Zip the zappers and bring our troops home.

I think, that if a director wanted a certain message in a movie such as Bill Maher's Religulous, even though some might be upset with some of the views taken, it was still the directors intent to show what was shown.

With the movie 2012, it seems that the directors original intent was to destroy important landmarks.

He changed his mind only because he was concerned about upsetting a few folks that also like to blow stuff up.

Bad choice from an artistic standpoint, but probably a good choice from a safety standpoint.
This certainly is not the first such decision like this. I remember Comedy Central censoring out Muhammad from a South Park episode.
At least Trey Parker and Matt Stone had the guts to not be pressured into changing it.
