Saw it at a morning matinee for 6 bucks and I give it a C for being fairly entertaining despite Cruise's obvious physical shortcomings trying to play an imposing 6'5" 250 pound man . Having read about a half dozen Reacher books I always saw this done as an R rated cable series anyway , since it takes awhile to understand what Reacher is all about , along with a better cast actor . Don't see any sequels without a reboot/recast unless it does well overseas . The Oblivion trailer looked very promising though .

Lee Childs "Jack Reacher" series are some of my favorite books and when the film was announced I had high hopes then the announcement Tom Cruise was playing JR and my heart fell. I don't particularly dislike Tom although my wife can't stand him since shortly after Interview with a Vampire. Part of Jack Reachers 'effect' is the fact that he is 6'5" around 240-250 and a silent but physically imposing type. 97xbam is rite too in that it takes a while and a lot of internal dialog and exposition to get to know Jack Reacher which just won't translate well in 110 min or so.

My dad has read the books and is pissed, I have not so its not an issue for me. The problem I tried to get him to realize there arent many guys that big that could carry the role in a major picture. Chris Hemsworth is close, but he's too young. Cruise is too short, but he's already proven he can bulk up a bit and kick ass.
Maybe an HBO type series with a unknown lead cast would have been better.

I recognize the fact that physically it is hard to find a match but Tom Cruise style is soooo different than Reacher - Reacher is a silent, grim, dour type and an ex-MP. If you weren't going to get the size right somebody like Liam Neeson would have been a much better fit - JR in my mind would be similar to the lead character from Taken.
For those of you who have never Read a Jack Reacher Book I highly recommend "Die Trying" - one of my favorites and an earlier Reacher novel. Hell even the dude who plays dexter would have been a better choice. I will see it when it comes out on disc and probably will enjoy it but I am pretty sure it won't be Jack Reacher to me.

Suppose a close match to 6'4" 240lbs would be a Dwayne Johnson size fellow? Like... Dwayne Johnson? lol

The Rock doesn't fit the physical description of blue eyed sandy haired Jack Reacher with a natural physique (not a pumped up body builder) any more than Cruise does - albeit in a different way . From Wikipedia;
Physical appearance Reacher is 6' 5" tall (1.96 m) with a 50-inch chest, and weighing between 210 and 250 pounds (100–115 kg). He has ice-blue eyes and dirty blond hair. He has very little body fat, and his muscular physique is completely natural (he reveals in Persuader, he has never been an exercise enthusiast). He is exceptionally strong, has a high stamina, but is not a good runner. |

Dolf Lundgren would work, 15 years ago. I can't even think of an actor today that would match the books descriptions of Reacher.
