I currently have a 62" DLP at one end of my Den. We are moving it because we are placing French doors out to a deck where it resides. The natural focal point of the room is unfortunately the fireplace. We do not use the fireplace, so I was thinking of lowering the mantle so the new tv I plan on installing above the fireplace will not be at an uncomfortable height. Any ideas as to how low I should go?

If you are willing to do without the fireplace, build out the wall in front of the fireplace, creating a false wall, closing it in. Then mount your tv on that wall. Plan for all of your cable / wire connections to come through this wall behind your TV. It's probably just as easy as lowering a mantle
