Default Is it possible to set up this tv to play shows off a hard drive?

I just bought this tv of a friend, Samsung la32a450c1d is the exact model according to the sticker. He's always used his laptop to play movies on it, but I want to find another way to do it. It has one usb port which says "source" on it but it won't acknowledge that the hard drive is plugged in. I was wondering if anyone had any ideas?

If not, can anyone tell me instead exactly what I would have to do to play the hard drive through an xbox. I heard you have to format it? But I've honestly never done anything even that complex in my life. Also that would involve losing everything that's on it, right? That sounds really annoying. Let's start with the first option, HD direct to TV. =)

I need to make it clear that I'm honestly clueless about most of this stuff and I'm sorry about that haha. Any help would be awesome.

I would recommend getting a WDTV Live media player. If you connect it to your home network/internet you can also get other streaming sources like netflix, youtube, etc.

I just got an AppleTv. It connects to my network, I can stream most content from my desktop and play most apps. You don't have to have a mac computer, it will work with windows. And I can control it with my harmony remote.
