Default Optical Cable Trouble

Hey guys, new to the forum and just hoping you all would have an idea of what I am dealing with. I recently bought a Samsung Surround System and I am trying to hook up my TV audio(Insignia Flat Panel LCD) through the optical cable port on the side of the tv. My goal is to be able to play my xbox sound through my surround, but the cable is not being read on one end or the other, or I am just an idiot. When the cable is plugged in and I turn on my receiver it automatically switches to optical setting so that tells me that it is reading the cable input. However, I am still not getting any sound from the speakers. Any ideas?

Edit:realized I posted this in the media player forum instead of the HD Media forum.

Make sure that you removed the clear plastic caps that are on the ends of the optical cable.

Why they make them clear is a mystery!!!

I'm doing the same thing on my PS3. I had to change the sound setting output from it to get it to work and yes, don't forget the plastic caps on the ends.
